Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies rode another strong effort from their most consistent
starter of 2017 Saturday night to a 3-0 win over Augusta. While Merandy
Gonzalez and Jordan Humphreys stole the headlines in the first half, they’ve
moved on while Harol Gonzalez remains, and he’s been giving the Columbia
Fireflies a good chance to win every time he takes the mound. He’s now gone
six-plus innings in all but three of his starts – one of those was a
rain-shortened outing – and he’s allowed two runs or less in ten of his starts.
Columbia built up a 3-0 lead for Harol early in this one, and he combined with
Adam Atkins and Matt Pobereyko to make it count.
The
Green Jackets only had a few scoring opportunities in this game, and their
first came with two outs in the 1st. A single and walk put two
runners on against Harol G, but he responded with a strikeout of Jose Viscaino
Jr. to escape the jam.
The
strikeout started a stretch during which Harol retired twelve of fourteen
batters, as he allowed just a double and ROE (E6) through the end of the 5th
inning, and he struck out another three batters during that span.
Columbia
was hitless until Natanael Ramos came up with one out in the 3rd. He
singled and eventually came around to score on an E4 as Columbia took a 2-0
lead.
Although
they were limited to just one single again in the 4th, they were
able to scratch out another run during the frame to extend the lead to 3-0.
Jacob Zanon and Brandon Brosher walked to start the frame, and both were
advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch before an out was made. Zanon
would come home on a Colby Woodmansee single, but Brosher was thrown out trying
to come home on a grounder.
The
Fireflies managed just one more hit in this game: a Luis Carpio infield single
in the 5th.
Augusta
had one more scoring chance against Harol G before he left the game. Harol got
a little wild in the 6th, issuing a walk and hitting a batter to put
two runners on with just one out. Fortunately for Columbia, Harol bounced back
and got the next batter to pop out in foul territory before a groundout ended
the frame.
Adam
Atkins worked around a throwing error (he committed) to face the minimum over
two scoreless innings of relief. He struck out Carlos Garcia during the outing
and induced five grounders.
A
night after blowing his first save opportunity as the Fireflies new closer,
Matt Pobereyko was given a chance for redemption and took it. It wasn’t a
perfect frame, but he struck out two and induced a pop out for the final out,
so he’ll take it. He’s up to 31 strikeouts in 17.1 IP this year, and SAL
batters have been whiffing at more than 20% of his pitches so far this year –
and I mean swinging strike/pitch (SwStr%), not swinging strike/swing (Wh/Sw%).
Looking
ahead, these two teams wrap up this series Sunday evening at 5 PM, with Chase
Ingram scheduled to start for Columbia.
