Recapish
Coming
off a
start that earned him EL Pitcher of the Week honors, Corey Oswalt nearly
matched his seven shutout innings from last week as the Binghamton Rumble
Ponies took their opener with Erie 3-0 Tuesday night. It was the Ponies 17th
shutout of the season, which is most in the EL, and the 6.2 shutout innings
lowered Oswalt’s ERA to 2.28, which is best in all of Double-A baseball (next
closest is 2.53, EL average is 4.11). The Ponies scored all three of their runs
on three extra base hits – two that left the park and one that came up just
short – over the first two innings, and the Bingo bullpen was nearly perfect in
relief of Oswalt to finish off the shutout.
Oswalt
wasn’t nearly as sharp as last week, when he retired the final twenty batters
of the game, but seven of the eight hits he allowed Tuesday were singles.
Perhaps more importantly, Oswalt issued zero walks for a second straight outing
Tuesday night. He issued just 1.5 BB/9-innings two years ago with Savannah, so
he’s shown this type of elite control before, but now he’s doing it as the most
effective starter in Double-A.
Erie
put two runners on against Oswalt in the 1st, but they couldn’t
scratch out any runs, which became a pattern in this game. They put multiple
runners on in four of the seven frames Oswalt pitched in Tuesday night, with
two runners reaching third base, but never got a run home. Oswalt was perfect
in the other three frames and never seemed too bothered by the base runners.
The
Ponies gave their starter a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st with a
little two out rally. Rehabbing Juan Lagares kept the frame alive with a single
into CF and then came around to score on Matt Oberste’s 22nd double
of the season.
Binghamton
added two more runs on a pair of solo blasts in the 2nd. David
Thompson hit the first one – his 11th of the season – and Champ
Stuart hit the second (#5 for Champ).
Erie
outhit Binghamton 7-to-1 after the 2nd, but the score remained 3-0,
so it didn’t matter. The final Binghamton hit was an L.J. Mazzilli single in
the 5th. Luis Guillorme walked in that frame to extend his on base
streak to 28 straight games.
Oswalt
ran into some trouble in the 7th, but he struck out Logan Watkins on
his 106th pitch for the second out of the frame before heading to
the showers. Ben Griset took over with two runners in scoring position and got
a groundout to end the threat. He faced four batters Tuesday night, and all
four batters were retired on a groundout to L.J. Mazzilli.
Cory
Burns worked a scoreless 9th for his 17th save of the
season. He struck out two and stranded a runner on second base to complete the
shutout.
Looking
ahead, the Rumble Ponies will send rehabbing Tommy Milone (0-0, 2.35 ERA) to the
hill Wednesday night with a chance to clinch a fifth straight series win.
