Recapish
After
dropping the resumption of their rain-suspended game from Friday, the Brooklyn
Cyclones made it an 0-2 Saturday with a nightcap loss to the Renegades. Because
it was the second game being played between these two minor league teams
Saturday, the game lasted just seven innings, although it seemed decided after four.
But the game was the secondary attraction for most fans in attendance Saturday
night, as it was Matt Harvey night in the NYPL for the first time ever. The
rehabbing Mets starter sat around 92 MPH (topped out at 93 MPH), allowed a run
during his one inning of work, and then spent a long time signing autographs.
Before
Harve took the mound, Brooklyn jumped ahead 1-0 with a 1st inning
run. Walter Rasquin started the game with his thirteenth double of the season,
went to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on a Quinn Brodey sac fly.
Harvey
issued a leadoff walk to Vidal Brijan during his inning of work and then Taylor
Walls singled Brujan home two batters later. He had trouble finding the zone
early and threw just 39% strikes overall. Carlos Sanchez caught Walls trying to
steal a base in the frame, and then Harvey got a fly out to end his frame. He
was expected to throw one inning or up to 30 pitches Saturday night, so he
likely finished his night with some sidework in the pen before the autographs.
Tony
Dibrell was expected to piggyback Harvey first, but instead Luis De Los Santos
took over in the 2nd and his three innings of work did not go so
well. He allowed the Renegades to score in each frame and left trailing 6-1.
Hudson Valley had one extra base hit in each inning against De Los Santos, and
there scoring was capped when Deion Tansel hit a two-run inside-the-park
homerun in the 4th.
Dibrell
did take over in the 5th and worked around an error to give Brooklyn
two scoreless innings. He hasn’t been having the smoothest transition to being
a pro (5.68 ERA), but this was his second straight scoreless outing and third
in his last four appearances, plus he has a 15 K: 6 BB ratio in 12.2 IP, so I’m
not too concerned. I’ve mostly just seen college clips of the good Dibrell
highlights, but he flashes some nice stuff for a 4th round pick.
After
the leadoff hit from Rasquin, Brooklyn wouldn’t connect for another hit until
the 6th, when Franklin Correa started the frame with a single. In my
few looks on MiLB.tv, 21-year old Franklin Correa has been a solid defender at
shortstop, and he’s been tearing it up with a 128 wRC+ since 7/9. That said, he
has a scary 29.3 K%: 2.7 BB% during that span, so I’m curious to see what he
can do with Columbia next year.
Correa eventually came around to
score the Cyclones second run when Jeremy Wolf doubled against Renegades
reliever Blake Pflughaupt. Between the first and second hits he allowed
Saturday night, Hudson Valley starter Tobias Myers struck out ten batters and
walked none, and he left with a pitch count of 84.
Looking
ahead, the Cyclones will try to salvage a win from this series Sunday behind
Jose Geraldo, who is making his second start for the team. The game is
scheduled for 5:05 PM and is the final game of the first half for both squads.
