Recapish
The
Brooklyn Cyclones dropped their rubber-match with West Virginia Thursday night
in Granville, taking an 8-3 loss to fall 19 games below .500. Brooklyn actually
outscored the Black Bears 3-2 if you only count earned runs, but the Cyclones
pitchers couldn’t make up for a myriad mistakes behind them. The Bk bats did
connect for nine hits, including four doubles, but they went just 1-6 with
runners in scoring position and drew zero walks.
For
some reason, the archive is missing most of the first three innings and I
wasn’t watching the game live, so I have no highlights of the Cyclones first
run or comments on how starter Jose Carlos Medina looked on the mound early.
The Bears announcers sounded impressed with Medina’s secondaries and control,
which he used to induce a lot of groundballs (76% of balls in play!).
Medina
retired six of the first seven batters he faced before running into some 3rd
inning trouble. The first five batters reached against him on four infield
singles and an E6 (throwing error). The final hit came on a liner to Correa
that slipped out of his glove with the bases loaded. Correa picked the ball up
and tried to get the out at third, but his throw sailed and all three runs were
able to come home on the play. The Black Bears got a leadoff single home
against Medina in the 4th for their only earned run against him.
Medina finished his outing on a high note, striking out Jared Oliva to end the
4th.
The
Cyclones scored their first run on a pair of doubles in the 2nd.
Mets 28th round pick Jeremy Vasquez has been tearing up Rookie ball
since he signed and he connected on his first of two doubles in the 2nd,
then Jose Maria doubled him home two batters later.
Maria
connected on another single with two outs in the 5th.
Cannon
Chadwick took over for Medina in the 5th and more Cyclones
frustration ensued. Chadwick struck out three in the frame but needed about six
outs to finally get through the inning and was charged with four runs (one
earned). He started the inning with a strikeout of Austin Meadows, but Meadows
reached on a passed ball and then scored on a Deon Stafford double. Chadwick
bounced back for another strikeout – Tristan Gray – but then a Lucas Tancas
grounder found its way through the left side of the infield to put runners on
the corners with one out.
Chadwick induced a potential double
play grounder to second baseman Walter Rasquin from the next batter, but things
went awry and no outs were recorded. Rasquin tried to tag Tancas, but
apparently missed without Tancas leaving the base paths, and then his throw to
first was late.
Chadwick
struck out the next batter for his third K of the inning, but the inning wasn’t
over yet, and Robbie Glendinning followed with an RBI single to RF. It looked
as though Chadwick’s nightmare would finally end when the next batter hit a hot
shot to third, but the ball skipped off Carl Stajduhar at third for an RBI
single – this play was initially scored as an error, which is why I said about
six outs above, but it was later changed into a hometown hit. The inning
finally ended when the next batter hit a groundout to Rasquin. Both of the
first two Brooklyn pitchers deserved better in this one.
The
Bears held an 8-1 lead after that mess of an inning and Brooklyn had little
fight left in them. Franklin Correa led off the 6th with a bunt
single, though the cameras were more interested in the cute dogs there for
“Bark in the Park” night than the game action at that point, so there are no
highlights. Vasquez connected on another double in the 7th. Correa
connected on another single in the 8th, went to third on a Leon Byrd
single, and then came home while Byrd was being thrown out trying to steal
second. Quinn Brodey singled and stole second base in the 9th, and
then Carl Stajduhar doubled him home for the Cyclones final run of the game.
Joe
Napolitano needed just eight pitches to work around a walk for a scoreless 6th.
Joey Naps yielded to Stephen Villines for the 7th and Villines impressed with two perfect innings. The Mets 10th round pick struck out four of six batters faced and has 14 total in 7 IP for Brooklyn. He dominated briefly with Kingsport before his promotion, so his season totals are great: 25 K: 0 BB over 15.1 IP, with three runs allowed on fourteen hits.

Looking
ahead, the Cyclones will stay on MiLB.tv this weekend in the lead up to the
NYPL All-Star game next week. The feed won’t be nearly as nice as what West
Virginia offered, but David Peterson is listed as Friday’s starter and Matt
Harvey has been announced as Saturday’s starter, so there will be plenty of
interest in the games.
