Recapish
Per
the Cola broadcasters, the Columbia Fireflies started the night with an eleven
game winning against the Green Jackets at Spirit Communications Parks, but
Augusta’s bats made sure that streak would not reach twelve. The Green Jackets
connected for five extra base hits, including three homeruns, and unloaded on
Gabriel Llanes and Cameron Griffin for ten runs. Brandon Brosher hit a monster
two run homer as part of a multi-hit effort for Columbia, but the Cola bats
were not up to the task of double-digit runs Thursday night.
Gabriel
Llanes needed just five pitches for the 1st and then the Fireflies
went out and got him a 1-0 lead. It all went downhill after that. Jacob Zanon
extended the 1st with a two out single, stolen second base (his 19th
stolen base) and then came around to score on a Dan Rizzie single.
But,
three batters into the 2nd, the Green Jackets were suddenly up 3-1
on the strength of two homeruns – Skyler Ewing led off the frame with his ninth
homer and then Sandro Fabian connected on a two run shot, his seventh of the
year. Llanes ended the frame with his first strikeout of the game.
Colby
Woodmansee’s hit came with two outs in the 2nd.
Llanes
hit the first batter of the 3rd and Augusta was able to get him
around to make it a 4-1 game. Llanes struck out Ewing looking for some revenge
in the frame.
Luis
Carpio led off the bottom of the 3rd with a single and stole second
(his 16th stolen base), but the Fireflies couldn’t get him home.
The
Fireflies started the 4th with three straight singles for a run to
make it 4-2. It looked like they might get more, but then Colby Woodmansee’s
poor luck hit an all-time high (or rock bottom?), as he hit a rope at the third
baseman, which started a threat-killing triple play.
Augusta
scratched out a run in the 5th and then Christian Paulino doubled
home a run with two outs to give the Green Jackets a 6-2 lead mid-6th.
Llanes struck out a pair in the 6th, but another HBP came around to
burn him.
Jay
Jabs kept the bottom of the 6th going with a walk to bring Brandon
Brosher to the plate, and that’s when the fans got a show. Brosher connected on
a homer announced at 408’, and he hit it to a part of the park that few homers
go to.
Although
he had been hit around some, Llanes had kept his pitch count low through six,
so he was left out for the 7th. Unfortunately, Llanes could only get
one out and left after allowing his third homer of the game.
Cameron Griffin took over for
Llanes and allowed a homer to the first batter he saw, which gave the Green
Jackets a 9-4 lead. Griffin struck out a pair during his 1.2 innings of work,
but Augusta added one more run to make it 10-4 before his night was done. Adam
Atkins worked a scoreless 9th for Columbia, which lowered his ERA to
0.78.
After
the Brosher homer, the only Cola hit was a 9th inning double from
Jay Jabs. Jabs made it to third, and the Fireflies loaded the bases in the
frame, but they couldn’t scratch out any more runs.
Looking
ahead, the Fireflies send Justin Brantley to the hill for his second start of
the season Friday as they try to even this series up.
