Recapish
The
Rumble Ponies finished off their second straight series sweep Thursday night in
Binghamton, beating Erie 6-1 for their 15th win in their last 18
contests! This win followed the same recipe most of their 67 wins (2nd
most in the Eastern League) have followed: good starting pitching, good
defense, timely hitting, plus a dash of great work from the pen. After a pair
of piggyback starts the last two turns through the rotation, Casey Delgado
shined over seven sparkling innings of one-run ball. He took the mound in the 2nd
with a 3-0 lead thanks to a Tomas Nido bomb and never looked back, allowing
just a two out RBI double in the 5th en route to one of his best
Double-A starts to date (he went 8-innings
on 6/2/16).
For
Delgado, his Double-A troubles have often begun with walks, and he’s up to 48
total in 93 IP this year. The walks were really out of hand over his first five
starts this year (17 in 24.2 IP), but he’s mostly kept them under control
since. He’s issued two or less walks in ten of his last fourteen appearances,
with a 3.69 ERA during that span, and he’s been getting stronger lately.
Delgado
struck out two during a perfect 1st and was rarely in trouble
Thursday night. The Sea Wolves did load the bases with two outs against him in
the 3rd, and Delgado threw a game-high 22 pitches in the frame, but
he’d get an inning ending groundout from the dangerous Christin Stewart (23 2B,
3 3B, 24 HR this year) to escape the threat. Delgado later allowed a two out
double in both the 5th and 6th innings, and the 5th
inning double came with a runner on first base, and so the Sea Wolves got on
the scoreboard.
Meanwhile,
Delgado’s teammates were lighting it up at the plate for thirteen hits. Champ
Stuart got the 1st inning rally started with an infield single, went
to second on a groundout, and then scored on a Matt Oberste single. Tomas Nido
then killed the rally with a loooong homerun to the railway tracks beyond the
LF wall. David Thompson added a single in the frame, but the rally had already
been killed, so...
Patrick
Biondi singled in the 2nd, advanced to second on a groundout, and
then came around to score on an L.J. Mazzilli RBI single (speed is fun).
Nido
made it a two-hit game with a 3rd inning single.
Biondi
reached on a bunt single in the 4th and again came around to score a
run. He advanced to second on a Champ single, to third on a Mazzilli pop up
single, and then came home on a passed ball.
David
Thompson led off the Bingo 5th with his 25th double of
the season and Biondi singled him home later in the frame for his third hit of
the night.
The
Champ added an 8th inning single for Binghamton’s 13th hit
of the night.
The
Ponies pen was sharp as usual, and lefty Kelly Secrest combined with Tyler
Bashlor for three strikeouts over two scoreless innings of relief. Bashlor is
up to 12 K: 2 BB in 7.1 IP since his promotion, and 73 K: 23 BB in 42.1 IP
overall this year.
Looking
ahead, the Ponies play will four games in Akron this weekend because they have
yet another double-header scheduled for Friday. Robert Gsellman (0-0, 5.68 ERA)
and Marcos Molina (1-5, 4.22 ERA) are expected to pitch for Binghamton, so
there should be plenty of interest in Friday’s games, which are slated to start
at 5:35 PM.
