Recapish
Las
Vegas made it two straight over Fresno and five of seven overall with a 4-3 win
Wednesday night. Mike Hauschild was the story of this game early, as he retired
the first fourteen 51s batters in a row to generate a little buzz, but then
Cody Decker ruined his perfecto bid and stole the show. Decker knocked in three
of the four Las Vegas runs with two massive bombs, the first of which broke up Hauschild’s
attempt, and the second one gave Las Vegas its first lead.
Outside
of a two-run 3rd, Wilfredo Boscan was effective enough to keep
Fresno from scoring, but he was rarely efficient in this one. Three of the four
hits he allowed came during Fresno’s big
3rd inning, and all four hits allowed were singles. He struck out
just one batter, and then he walked the next one before being relieved with two
outs in the 6th.
As
mentioned, Decker ended a streak of fourteen straight retired for Hauschild
with a solo blast in the 5th.
Jayce
Boyd led off the Las Vegas 6th with a single, moved up to second
when Victor Cruzado worked a walk, to third on a Phillip Evans single, and then
came around to score the tying run on a Kevin Plawecki sac fly.
Logan
Taylor finished off the 6th for Boscan and stranded that walk at
third base to hold the tie.
Fresno
made a pitching change for the 7th and Las Vegas struck quick
against the Grizzlies first reliever, Dayan Diaz. Travis Taijeron took a walk
to start the frame and then Cody Decker went deep for a second straight AB. The
51s threatened for more, as Boyd singled and stole second base later in the
frame, but they couldn’t add any insurance runs.
Taylor
stayed out for the 7th and retired the first two Fresno batters of
the frame, but then Tyler White took him deep for his 21st PCL homer
of the season to make this a one-run game.
The
51s weren’t able to add any insurances runs over the final two frames, but it
didn’t matter. Ben Rowen and Alberto Baldonado faced the minimum over two
scoreless to close out the win. They both started their outings with
strikeouts, although Rowen needed some assistance from Kevin Plawecki to get
through his inning with just three batters faced.
Looking
ahead, Las Vegas has a chance to clinch a road series win over Fresno Thursday
night, but they’ll have to do it without a true starter. Reliever Luis Mateo is
scheduled to make the start for Las Vegas, but he’s been a pure reliever since
TJS problems in 2013, so it will be all hands on deck for the 51s pen.
