From the Jay Bruce trade
RHP Ryder Ryan, 22
2017 in the MID: 41.1 IP, 25.9 K%: 9 BB%, 4.79 ERA, 3.83

The path to the Mets:
When Ryder Ryan was in
high school in North Carolina, he posted a 0.28 ERA over 54.2 IP as a
starter, but he also hit .597 with 29 RBI at North Mecklenburg and then went
off to play third base at UNC. He barely
pitched and didn’t play much 3B in two years at UNC either, but the one
appearance he made on the mound was enough to get some teams interested in him.
The Cleveland Indians had already drafted
Ryan once – in the 40th round of the 2014 draft after he finished
H.S. – and they still saw enough in him from that one College outing to take a
30th round chance on him in 2016. This time Ryan signed – apparently
BA ranked his fastball the best in the Indians draft class that year – and he
went to the AZL to work on his craft. The Indians saw enough improvement from
him this year that they sent him to A-ball to start the year and he’s been
pitching at the end of games since.
He was great for the Lake County
Captains in the first half, posting a 0.78 ERA over 23 IP through June 9th,
with 31 K: 9 BB while holding the Midwest League to a .388 OPS – this earned
him a midseason All-Star nod. However, it’s been a tough second half for Ryan,
as the Midwest League has knocked him around for a 1.141 OPS and 9.82 ERA since
6/9 (a span of 18.1 IP). While that’s not good, I think it’s worth noting that
this is his first full season as just a pitcher, and it’s coming after he was
away from pitching for most of two years, so he may have hit a wall or been in
a dead-arm phase.
The stuff: As a
30th-round pick who didn’t really pitch in College, there’s not a
lot available on Ryan. He throws a fastball that I heard called as high as 97
while I was looking for highlights, but I didn’t get consistent info on his
velo range while he was with the Captains. However, he made his Cola debut on
8/11 and the Fireflies announcers said he was, “hovering around 96 and topping
out at 97.” Apparently Jose Leger told them that Ryan has touched as high as
100. My impression is that he’s not mid-to-upper-90’s with consistency yet, but
there’s reason to think he can get there as he builds up his arm/shoulder
strength.
Ryan also throws a slider and
changeup, and both show interesting potential, but they are currently
inconsistent pitches.
He
credits the staff in Arizona for helping him really improve his control, and
he’s seen a minor improvement in walk rate this year: from 10.6% in 18.2 IP
last year to 9.0% in 41.1 IP this year.
The secondaries: As
a 2016 draft pick, Ryan is not in danger of being taken in the Rule-5 (not that
anyone would take this raw of an A-ball pitcher in the major league portion of
that draft anyway).
The
upside here is a useful Major League power arm, but it’s the riskiest profile
of the group.
