Recapish
The
Brooklyn Cyclones overcame an early 3-0 deficit to even their series with
Aberdeen Monday night thanks to a four-run 7th. Brooklyn starter
Colin Holderman was making a minor league rehab start for the Cyclones and he
struggled with command out of the gate, which Aberdeen was more than happy to
take advantage of. Fortunately for Brooklyn, the rest of the pitching staff on
call Monday was more than up to the task of shutting down this Iron Birds
lineup. The Cyclones finally got to Aberdeen’s pen in the 7th and
the floodgates opened, although the Brooklyn bats did little to support the
four run rally.
Holderman
has been out for Columbia with an undisclosed injury since April and this was
just his second appearance back in a game, so the early game struggles can be
forgiven. He made just four starts for Columbia this year, and likely won’t be
back to full strength (pitch-count wise) until the end of the month, so it’s
basically a lost year for him. The good news is that some who saw him in April
thought he could be pitching in the FSL already, so he might not have to repeat
in the SAL next year (or at least, not for long if he’s healthy).
He walked two in a row and then
allowed a homer to T.J. Nichting, which gave Aberdeen a 3-0 lead for six
innings. Holderman finished his outing by retiring five straight, with three
strikeouts along the way.
Reed
Gamache doubled for Brooklyn in the 1st and then Edgardo Fermin
doubled in the 3rd, but neither came around to score. Fermin is a
name to keep an eye on for next season, as he should be in the Cola middle
infield and could have an interesting bat.
The
Cyclones got two more hits before the 7th: a single from Carl
Stajduhar and then Leon Byrd connected for his fifth double of the season in
the 5th. Walter Rasquin was ejected after disagreeing with a called
third strike in the 5th.
Brooklyn’s
big 7th featured just two hits – both singles – three walks, and one
big throwing error from the Iron Birds reliever, Zac Lowther. Franklin Correa
singled early in the frame and Quinn Brodey singled home the go-ahead run to
knock Lowther out of the game.
The
Cyclones were able to come back in this game thanks to the huge effort from
Trent Johnson. Johnson took over from Holderman in the 3rd and
worked around some trouble to keep Aberdeen off the board through the 7th.
He allowed a one out single in the 7th but then picked that runner
off and induced a grounder from the next batter, so it looked like he was going
to get his five innings. Unfortunately for Johnson, Franklin Correa committed a
throwing error on the grounder, which kept the inning alive and knocked Johnson
out of the game
Trey
Cobb came in to face the tough lefty Ben Breazeale in a tight spot, but ended
up walking him to put two runners on. Cobb then got a groundout from Nichting
to end the frame and worked a perfect 8th to keep Brooklyn ahead
4-3.
With
the game on the line, Manager Edgardo Alfonzo went to Gregorix Estevez for the
9th and he worked a perfect frame for the save.
Looking
ahead, the Cyclones go for the series win in Aberdeen Tuesday night behind Luis
De Los Santos, with game time scheduled for 7:05 PM.
