Recapish
The
Binghamton bats were held scoreless for a second straight game Sunday afternoon
in Akron, and the Rubber Ducks took a third straight game over the Rumble
Ponies for an Akron series win. The Ponies managed just one run over the final
three games of this series (25 innings), so it’s clear what the problem was,
and I think Akron pitching deserves a lot of the credit. The Ponies lead the EL
in walks drawn, yet the Akron pitchers combined for zero walks Sunday en route
to a second straight shutout.
Champ
Stuart started the game with a double, and Champ on second with zero outs is
usually an automatic run, but the Ponies couldn’t even get him to third base
this time.
A
missed catch error from Gustavo Nunez covering second opened the door for a big
Akron 1st inning. Had Nunez simply caught the ball, there would’ve
been two outs in the frame, but instead the second out came when Corey Oswalt
struck out the next batter. Unfortunately, Oswalt had trouble getting a fourth
out in the frame, and Akron took advantage for a 2-0 lead. He issued
back-to-back walks and then Taylor Murphy reached on an infield RBI single.
David
Thompson singled and made it as far as second base in the 2nd. He
singled again in the 5th, but this time he was forced out at second.
Oswalt
settled in for three straight scoreless frames after the long 1st,
but he hit a speed bump in the 5th as Akron doubled its lead. Bobby
Bradley, who struck out against Oswalt in the 1st, connected on a
two out, two-run double to make this a 4-0 game. Oswalt bounced back to finish
his night with a scoreless 6th, but still took the loss. Although
only two were earned, it was the first time he had allowed:
-
a run since 7/26 (he entered the game with a
streak of 19 scoreless innings dating back to the 1st inning of that
start)
-
more than one run since 7/15 (when he allowed
two)
-
more than two runs since 7/3 (when he allowed
three)
-
more than three runs since 5/13 (when he allowed
six), and he’s allowed fewer than three runs in ten of thirteen starts since
then, and 14 of 21 starts overall.
Ben Griset and Tim Peterson each
worked a scoreless inning of relief behind Oswalt, and both struck out a pair
of Ducks.
The
final two Binghamton hits came from Tomas Nido (single in the 7th)
and Gustavo Nunez (single in the 8th).
Looking
ahead, the Ponies hope to get their offense going against some Sea Wolves
pitching in Erie, as the two teams have a midweek series coming up.
