Recapish
After
dropping the first two games of this series Saturday, the Cyclones were hoping
to salvage a win from Hudson Valley Sunday before the All-Star Break came. Unfortunately,
while their starter Jose Geraldo gave them six sparkling shutout innings, their
offense gave them just one run, and the Renegades finished with two. For a
third straight game the Cyclones scored first and lost, but at least this game
stayed close until the end. After a string of great outings for Brooklyn to
start his NYPL debut, Stephen Villines was the culprit in this one, allowing a
two-run homer in the bottom of the 8th, which put the Hudson Valley
ahead 2-1.
The
Cyclones did connect for eight hits Sunday, but two players had three apiece,
and those two were max distance from each other in the lineup. Jeremy Vasquez
started his three hit game with a single in the 1st.
Brooklyn
wouldn’t get another hit until the 5th, when Jeremy Wolf singled for
the first of his three hits Sunday.
Although
the Cyclones weren’t having a good day at the plate, they were having a good
day in the field, helping their starter through a very efficient six inning
start. Jose Geraldo needed just 71 pitches for 18 outs Sunday, and he might’ve
been left in longer had the Cyclones given him a lead. He appears to be mostly
a fastball-slider-changeup pitcher, though he does appear to have a curve that
he’ll mix in as well.
Brooklyn
turned double plays behind Geraldo in the 1st and 2nd inning,
and then Carlos Sanchez threw out a runner to help him through the 3rd.
Geraldo then struck out three over his final three innings of work, retiring
nine of ten batters faced before giving way to the Cyclones pen.
Vasquez
singled in the 6th, but was stranded at second base.
Jose Maria started the 7th
by crushing one to the center field wall for a leadoff double. Jeremy Wolf
followed with a single, which advanced Maria to third, but Brooklyn couldn’t
get him home to take the lead.
Villines
started his night with a quick bottom of the 7th, striking out Isaac
Bernard along the way to keep the game scoreless.
The
only inning that Brooklyn scored in was the only inning that both Jeremy’s
batted during. Jeremy Vasquez started the frame with a double, and then Jeremy
Wolf singled him home with two outs to give Brooklyn a 1-0 lead.
That
lead lasted all of four batters. With two outs in the bottom of the 8th
and a runner on third base, Oscar Robles blasted his first of the year to give
Hudson Valley a 2-1 lead.
The
Cyclones got the tying run to second base in the 9th but again
couldn’t come through with a big hit – they finished just 2-15 with runners in
scoring position Sunday. Walter Rasquin had the only hit in the frame, but Brooklyn
had the tying run on second with nobody out and couldn’t even get him to third.
Looking
ahead, the Cyclones have two days off for the All-Star break and they need it. They
return home Tuesday for a three game series with Aberdeen that starts on
Wednesday at 7:00 PM. They still have three more MiLB.tv games against the SI
Yanks this year, so there’s a little more Cyclones coverage to look forward to.
Two Mets prospects were elected to represent the Cyclones at this years NYPL
All-Star game: Jose Miguel Medina and Walter Rasquin.
