Recapish
The
Brooklyn Cyclones season-long woes continued Tuesday night in West Virginia, as
they dropped their opener with the Black Bears 7-3 to fall 19 games below .500. Cyclones starter Jose Geraldo was
making his first NYPL start, and the big righty showed the rawness of a rookie
ball pitcher, but the potential of a future bullpen arm. Although his defense let him
down some, Geraldo left trailing just 2-1, but then the Bears went to work on
Brooklyn’s bullpen and put this game out of reach.
Brooklyn
got a 1st inning hit from one of their two All-Stars, Jose Miguel
Medina, who lined a single into RF.
Jose
Geraldo started the year in the Kingsport rotation, where he was fairly
consistent for a rookie ball pitcher without a high strikeout rate: 42 IP, 45
H, 4.71 ERA, 28 K: 14 BB, 2 HR. I make no guarantees of a 2018 breakout in the
Fireflies pen, but I thought he looked like a raw version of Adonis Uceta out
there, and Uceta was struggling (by the stats) as a starter in Rookie ball at
this point last year, too. Geraldo was a little shaky after making a
non-pitching mistake in the 1st, battled command issues some in the
2nd, but then looked very sharp in the 3rd and 4th
innings, even though he did allow another run. He had a nice pace with no one
on base, but he was Steve Trachsel-esque with runners on base. The umpires also
threw out a pair of balls because he was licking his hand while on the rubber,
and then later called him for a quick-pitch balk.
Chris
Sharpe hit a lead off single against Geraldo in the 1st and then
went to second on a sac bunt, but then Geraldo struck out Deon Stafford for the
second out of the frame. It looked like Geraldo would get out of the frame with
no damage, but then Sharpe took off from second and weirdness ensued. Geraldo
initially hesitated to move, but then he finally reacted and threw the ball
wide of third base, which allowed Sharpe to come home easily. The next pitch
from Geraldo hit Dylan Busby, Tristan Gray followed with a single and then both
runners advanced on a wild pitch from Geraldo. Geraldo finally escaped the 1st
down just 1-0 after Lucas Tancas hit a groundout to shortstop.
The
Cyclones scratched out a run in the 3rd to tie the game at one.
Franklin Correa started the frame with a single, went to second when Dylan
Snypes coaxed a walk, to third on a fly out, and then came around to score on
Leon Byrd’s first of two singles.
Geraldo
worked around a pair of base runners for a scoreless 2nd. His best
inning by far was the 3rd, when he struck out two during a perfect
frame.
Brooklyn
got three base runners on in the 4th, but Quinn Brodey was caught stealing
after his single, and then nothing came of some two-out walks to Carl Stajduhar
and Franklin Correa.
He
probably should’ve breezed through the 4th, but Franklin Correa
committed a two-base throwing error that allowed Raul Siri to reach third with
just one out. The Bears got Siri home on a sac fly to re-take the lead at 2-1.
Geraldo later finished the frame with a strikeout of Sharpe to end his night on
a high note.
Trey
Cobb took over for Geraldo in the 5th and had a rare rough outing.
He allowed a leadoff triple, walked a batter, and then Tancas took him deep to
make this a 5-1 game. Cobb sandwiched the homer with a pair of strikeouts, but
that didn’t make his first pro homer allowed go down any easier.
The
Cyclones other NYPL All-Star, Walter Rasquin, led off the 6th with a
double to start a little rally. Fellow All-Star Medina reached on a HBP in the
frame and both came around to score and make this a 5-3 game. The Bears made a
pitching change after both runners made it around, and Jeremy Vasquez greeted
new pitcher Hector Quinones with a double into the left center field gap, but
the Cyclones ran out of 6th inning magic after that.
Marcel
Renteria came in for the 6th and had a very strong first inning of
work, but then things didn’t go as well in the 7th. He struck out
Sandy Santos during a perfect 6th, but had to leave with one in, one
on and just one out (from another strikeout) in the 7th.
Conner
O’Neil took over for Renteria in the 7th and allowed the inherited
runner to score on a sac fly. He struck out Santos during a scoreless 8th
and overall looked pretty interesting, but he probably owes his catcher Carlos
Sanchez a steak dinner after Sanchez threw out a pair of would-be base stealers
while he was out there.
The Cyclones connected on three singles
after the 6th: Byrd in the 7th, Brodey in the 8th,
and Correa in the 9th.
Looking
ahead, the Cyclones play two more in West Virginia before heading to Hudson
Valley (which also has MiLB.tv coverage) to end the first-half. Game time
Wednesday is 7:05 PM and Chris Viall (0-0, 5.68 ERA) is listed as Brooklyn’s starter,
though he isn’t very stretched out this year so I expect someone to piggyback
behind him.
