Recapish
Although
they lost their starter to an apparent minor injury in the 2nd, the
Columbia Fireflies pieced together a shutout to clinch a series win in
Lexington Thursday night. Whatever the injury, Taylor would go just two innings
during his next start (on the road in Kannapolis) and has since been placed on
the DL. The Cola pen has been lights out all season and they were at the top of
their game in this one. Cameron Griffin and Matt Blakham were the workhorses,
combining for 5.2 innings of scoreless relief and just two singles allowed. In
what will be his last game of the season, Desmond Lindsay put up four hits,
including a pair of doubles, and played a role in all four runs scored.
I
didn’t know this was going to be Lindsay’s last game of the season – it has
since been announced that he had ulnar disposition surgery, but he’ll be back
by Spring Training – but he went out like Cliff Floyd in
2003 (Cliff went 12-19 over his final week of action before having
surgery). Lindsay’s big night started with a double in the 1st.
Cola
starter Blake Taylor threw just 9 of 26 pitches for strikes, which led to him
walking three of six batters faced before leaving. He was helped through the 1st
by a double play, and Cameron Griffin took over for him with one on and one out
in the 2nd.
Griffin
stranded that base runner, struck out a pair, and faced just one over the
minimum during his 2.2 IP.
Andres
Gimenez’ first hit of the game came with two outs in the 3rd, and
his second hit came with two outs in the 5th.
Lindsay
led off the 4th with a single, went to second on a Dash Winningham
single, and came around to score on a Luis Carpio single.
Matt
Blackham took over from the Cola pen in the 5th and gave the
Fireflies three shutout innings. He struck out four and faced just one over the
minimum.
Lindsay
sparked another run when he led off the 6th with a single. Dash
singled him to third this time and then Dan Rizzie knocked him in with an RBI
single.
Adam
Atkins struck out two during a scoreless frame to lower his ERA to a miniscule
0.92.
Colby
Woodmansee has been hitting into poor luck lately, but he’s still taking walks
at a good rate. He and Ian Strom started the 9th with a walk, which was
just enough to get Desmond Lindsay one last AB, and he came through with a two
run double to double the Fireflies lead.
Although
it was no longer a save situation, Cola’s closer Adonis Uceta took over in the 9th
and finished off the shutout. The 23-year old righty has since been promoted to
the St. Lucie Mets, and he finished his Fireflies career with a streak of 21
straight appearances with zero earned runs allowed (one unearned run allowed
during the streak): 29.1 IP, 14 H, 33 K: 8 BB. For the season, Cola’s closer
went 4-0 and a perfect 11-11 on save opportunities, and finished with 47 K: 16
BB (28.1 K%: 9.6 BB%) and just 23 H (.461 OPS) allowed in 44.1 IP.
Looking
ahead (from this game), the Fireflies went to Kannapolis and took three of four
from the Intimidators (not on MiLB.tv). They then came home for a weekend
series with Augusta, and those recaps will be up shortly after this one.
