Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies survived a shootout with Harrisburg Sunday afternoon
to complete their sweep of the Senators. Both teams came out firing and the
Senators held a 6-5 lead after three, but Binghamton scored the last three runs
for an 8-6 win. The bullpen has been one of Binghamton’s biggest strengths all
season long and it shined again Sunday: Ben Griset, Kelly Secrest, recently
acquired Drew Smith, and recently promoted Tyler Bashlor combined for 6.1
scoreless innings with seven strikeouts. Both teams combined for double-digit
hits and the Ponies got contributions up and down the lineup for sixteen hits
and five walks: Luis Guillorme was on base five times, David Thompson went deep
as part of a multi-hit game, and Gustavo Nunez connected on an RBI double and a
homerun.
Binghamton
jumped ahead 2-0 in the 1st on three straight hits. Luis Guillorme
and Juan Lagares reached on back-to-back singles and then Matt Oberste doubled
them both home.
The
bottom of the 1st began with a fielding error by David Thompson,
which opened the door for a big inning for Harrisburg. Gsellman retired the
next two batters on groundouts, so he would’ve had a 1-2-3 inning without the
error, but instead found himself facing Dan Gamache with a run in and the bases
empty. Gamache worked a walk to keep the inning alive and two hits later the
Senators were up 3-2 with a runner on second after a Yadiel Hernandez double.
They might’ve kept adding on if not for Juan Lagares, who threw Hernandez out
trying to score when Khayyan Norfork followed with a single into CF.
That
lead did not last long, as David Thompson started the 2nd with a
solo blast to left field, his tenth of the year. Tyler Moore added a single
later in the frame and was on base four times Sunday.
Gsellman
allowed a leadoff single in the 2nd but worked around it to maintain
the 3-3 tie. He finished the frame with a strikeout of Stephen Perez.
Guillorme
led off the 3rd with a single, went to second on a groundout, and
then came around to score on a Kevin Kaczmarski single. Kacz moved up to second
on the throw home after his single, and then came around to score after a David
Thompson RBI single.
The
Senators rallied for three runs to take the lead back in the bottom of the 3rd.
The first four Harrisburg batters reached on two singles and two walks to make
it 5-3, and then the tying run came home on a 5-4-3 double play. Gsellman was
given a chance to finish his outing on a high note, but Jake Lowery had other
plans. He doubled home Drew Ward to make it a 6-5 game and send Gsellman to the
showers.
Lefty
Ben Griset finished things off for Gsellman in the 3rd and then
worked a scoreless 4th. Griset struck out Drew Ward to finish
another strong outing, and he lowered his ERA to 2.33 with 1.1 scoreless. Also shown below is Champ's bunt single from the top half of the 4th.
Matt
Oberste got the 5th inning started with a single through the right
side and the Ponies worked him around to tie this game up again. Kacz singled
him to second base and Gustavo Nunez doubled him home later in the frame.
Manager
Luis Rojas brought in another Southpaw for the 5th and Kelly Secrest
provided the Ponies with two scoreless frames. He struck out Lowery in the 5th
and then Victor Robles during a perfect 6th.
Binghamton
jumped ahead with Secrest on the mound, which netted him a win. Guillorme
worked a one out walk in the 6th, went to second on a Juan Lagares
hit, to third on a fly out, and then scored on another Kacz RBI single. Lagares
went first-to-third on the Kacz hit, but he was stranded 90’ from home and then
took the rest of the night off.
Drew
Smith worked a scoreless 7th, although things got a little prickly
for him. He walked two and allowed an infield single that loaded the bases, but
then bounced back with a strikeout of Lowery before a pop out on the infield ended
the frame.
The
Ponies had two more hits in their bats: another Guillorme single and then
Gustavo Nunez’s first homer since joining the Ponies.
Tyler
Bashlor took over in the 8th and Rojas let his new flamethrower stay
out there for a two-inning save. He had ten saves for St. Lucie, but this was
his first Double-A save and his first save that lasted more than one inning
this year. He struck out Robles, Jose Marmolejos and Khayyan Norfork during his
outing.
Looking
ahead, the Ponies have Monday off but they return home for a three-game series
with Erie on Tuesday.
