Recapish
Colin
Holderman made his first appearance for the Columbia Fireflies since late April
Thursday night, but it would not be a happy return for the big 6’7 righty, as
Cola took a 5-0 loss in their opener with the Hickory Crawdads. Holderman
battled control problems at times Thursday, and the Crawdads built a 3-0 lead
against him en route to their shutout win. Hickory starter Christian Torres
tossed six innings of one-hit ball and then the Crawdads pen limited Columbia
to two hits over three scoreless to finish off the shutout.
Holderman’s
night can be summed up in the results from the first two batters of the game:
he struck out the first batter but then walked the next on four pitches. When
healthy and at full game speed, Holderman’s stuff is too good for the SAL, but
he’s still working his way back from a labrum injury that kept him out for two
months right now.
Holderman
would work around the walk for a scoreless frame, though Rangers stud 18-year
old prospect Leody Taveras (who worked the walk) had sped his way to third base
by the third out. He issued a walk in each of the first three innings and the
third one came back to bite him. Alex Kowalczyk connected on a two out double
to knock in Taveras from first, which made this a 1-0 game.
Holderman’s night ended with a
strikeout, but it came after he had allowed three straight singles for a run in
the 5th. Cameron Griffin took over and finished the frame for
Holderman, but not before one of the base runners he inherited came around to
score and make it 3-0.
The
Fireflies managed just three hits all night, and they were all singles: Andres
Gimenez singled in the 3rd, Brandon Brosher reached leading off the
8th, and Luis Carpio kept the game alive with one in the 9th.
Griffini
stayed in and worked a scoreless 6th for the Fireflies, but he
couldn’t make his way through the 7th, so Joseph Zanghi had to come
in and finish off the frame.
Zanghi
retired all four batters he faced Thursday night, striking out the final two in
a row during the 8th.
The
Fireflies went to Matt Pobereyko for the 9th, but he had to leave
after facing just one batter when a liner hit him in the arm. He’ll probably
have a nasty bruise, and it may keep him out a few days, but it didn’t look
like anything serious had happened to the strikeout machine (37 K: 8 BB in 21.2
IP this year). The Crawdads got the run home with Adam Atkins on the mound to
cap the scoring.
Looking
ahead, these two teams continue their series Friday at 7:05 PM, with Chase
Ingram (1-3, 2.95 ERA) scheduled to make his fifth start since rejoining the
Fireflies: 16 K: 14 BB, 12 H allowed over 21.1 IP.
