Recapish
Although
the PCL is known for its high offense environments, there are a few parks that
play like fair, and First Tennessee Park in Nashville is usually one of them.
That wasn’t the case in the series opener Tuesday night, as the Nashville
Sounds teed off against Donovan Hand like it was Coor’s Field during the
mid-90’s. They got to Hand for four homeruns as they took control of this game
with a 10-0 lead through the 4th. The 51s would churn out a few runs
late to make this less of a laugher, but the game was over early.
After
a mostly successful stint with Binghamton earlier this season, Donny Hand has
been hit-or-miss with Las Vegas. This was the biggest miss for him so far, as
the Sounds were not missing against him. Matt Olson got the scoring started for
Nashville with his 20th homer of the season in the 1st,
Mark Canha reached a double-digit homerun total when he led off the 2nd
with a bomb, and then Renato Nunez and Canha took Hand deep to make it 10-0 in
the 4th.
While
the Sounds were taking control of this game early, the 51s struggled to get
anything going against Nashville starter Jharel Cotton. Cotton limited the 51s
to just two hits over his six shutout innings, and he faced just one over the
minimum Tuesday. The only two hits against Cotton came when Neil Walker singled
in the 1st and Phil Evans doubled in the 4th.
Nashville
exploded for 15 hits through the first four innings, but freshly signed
Jonahtan Albaladejo came in and shut them down after that. He limited the
Sounds bats to just three hits over the final four innings, which might’ve made
a difference had the game still been close.
Cotton
left after the 6th and the 51s bats came right to life. Dom Smith
singled and Travis Taijeron doubled home a run to get Las Vegas on the board.
The
51s rallied for three more with two outs in the 8th. Brandon Nimmo
kept the frame alive with a single, went to third on a Neil Walker single, and
then came around to score on an Amed Rosario single to make it 10-2. Dom Smith then
doubled the 51s run total with his 30th double of the season to cap
the scoring.
Looking
ahead, the 51s continued this four-game series behind Wilfredo Boscan on
Wednesday and lost, but I will not be covering that game now.
