Recapish
Coming
off his longest outing and the best start of his career, Cola starter Justin
Brantley struggled early against Hickory as the Crawdads took the finale to
finish off a sweep on Sunday. Hickory jumped ahead 5-0 over their first three
chances aginst Brantley, and while the Fireflies ended up outhitting them, the
Crawdads walked away with a 7-4 win. Although it was in a losing effort, the
Cola bats showed more life than they had over the past week, so hopefully they
can take that on the road with them this week.
Brantley
found himself down 2-0 before he could record an out, as the first three
Hickory batters reached on a: single, single, two-run double/E7. Brantley was
better after that, but he allowed another two-run double in the 3rd
and that 5-0 lead was too big to overcome. He racked up four strikeouts and
finished his night with three straight scoreless, plus he retired 11 of the
final 13 batters he faced. He may be an experienced MiLB pitcher, but he’s
still new to starting, so it was good to see that he could make the necessary
adjustments to settle in and give the Fireflies some length.
The
Cola bats started to come alive in the 3rd, when they loaded the
bases. Colby Woodmansee doubled Reed Gamache (HBP) to third and Andres Gimenez
followed with an infield single to load the bases, but the Fireflies got just
one run out of the situation.
The
Fireflies got another run back in the 4th. Natanael Ramos got things
started with a single, although he’d be replaced on the bases by a Jay Jabs
fielder’s choice. Jabs came around to score two batters later when Gamache
singled him home to make it 5-2.
Jacob
Zanon reached on a catcher’s interference and stole his second base of the game
– 26th stolen base of the season with Columbia – and Ian Strom
followed with a single, but Zanon couldn’t come home on the infield hit.
Gamache
added another hit in the 6th.
Andres
Gimenez led off the bottom of the 7th with a single, went to third
on a Zanon single, and then came home on a wild pitch to make this a 5-3 game.
Matt
Pobereyko took over for Brantley in the top of the 7th. He faced
five batters and none of them made contact against him: BB, K, BB, K, K. The
Crawdads added a run against Pobereyko on a two out RBI double from Anderson
Tejeda in the 8th to extend their lead back to three runs.
Jabs
and Gamache both singled for Columbia in the 8th, but their hits
sandwiched a double play.
The
Crawdads added one more run in the 9th against Cameron Griffin,
although this one was unearned because it came on an E4 with two outs in the
frame.
That
final insurance run looked pretty important three batters into the bottom of
the 9th. Gimenez started the frame with a walk, advanced to second
on a Luis Carpio single, and then came home on a Zanon double. The Fireflies
loaded the bases, which put the tying runs on with less than two outs, but a
Jay Jabs grounder turned into two outs to end this one abruptly.
Looking
ahead, the Fireflies get a day off Monday while they travel to Augusta, Ga,
where they’ll open a mid-week series with the Green Jackets on Tuesday.
