Recapish
It
took nine innings for either side to score a run in game one, and Akron ended
up walking off with a 1-0 win. The Ponies weren’t going to let that happen in
game two, as they jumped ahead 1-0 after three innings and then broke this game
open with a four-run 4th. Mickey Jannis matched Binghamton’s game
one starter Marcos Molina with nine strikeouts in the complete game shutout
win, and it was the second dominant outing for the knuckler over his last three
starts. The bottom of Bingo’s lineup led the charge offensively, as Dale
Burdick and Champ Stuart combined for half of the Ponies ten hits.
Akron
had two decent threats against Jannis: when they got a runner to third base
with one out in the 1st and then again when Tyler Krieger tripled
with two outs in the 7th. Between those two players reaching third
base, Jannis retired 18 of 20 batters faced, a streak that started when Bobby
Bradley grounded into an inning ending double play in the 1st. He
might’ve set a career high with pitches thrown, but he battled his was through
some wildness early to give the Ponies one of their top performances of the
season. After allowing the two out triple in the 7th, Jannis bounced
back with his ninth strikeout of the game to put an exclamation point on his
outing!
Offensively,
Dale Burdick got things started for Binghamton with a leadoff single in the 3rd.
He moved up to second on a wild pitch, to third on an L.J. Mazzilli single, and
then Luis Guillorme singled him home to make this a 1-0 game.
The
Ponies added four more runs in the 4th on three straight doubles.
David Thompson reached on a one out single and then Gustavo Nunez, Dale
Burdick, and Champ Stuart followed with doubles to make it 4-0. Champ would
come home on a Guillorme sac fly later in the frame.
The
Ponies bats had one more little rally in them during the 6th.
Burdick started the frame with his third hit of the night, and again he’d advanced
to second on a wild pitch and up to third on a single, this time from Champ
Stuart. And just like in the 3rd, Guillorme would be the one to
bring him home though this time he came home on a groundout.
Looking
ahead, the Ponies have one more game in Akron before returning home to host New
Hampshire and Trenton. Corey Oswalt gets the nod in the Akron finale, which is
scheduled for Wednesday at noon.
Two-for-one deal? @NASANewHorizons’ next flyby target in the distant Kuiper Belt, may actually be two objects! Info: https://t.co/C8rmuVvQ2v pic.twitter.com/ptqeQmIIMf— NASA (@NASA) August 3, 2017
