Recapish
After
taking a 2-1 loss in game two to split their double-header Friday night, the
Binghamton Rumble Ponies looked to gain a series edge behind Mickey Jannis in
game three Saturday. Unfortunately, while Jannis limited Akron to their only
run over his five innings of work, the Ponies bats were held to zero runs, and
Binghamton took a second straight loss. Akron starter Luis Lugo walked four but
limited Binghamton to just two hits over his 6.1 IP, and then Jordan Milbrath
did the rest for the Rubber Ducks, finishing with four strikeouts over 2.2
scoreless.
There
isn’t a whole lot to recap here. Jannis issued a 1st inning walk and
then allowed a two out double to Bobby Bradley, but he stranded both runners in
scoring position to keep it 0-0. Bradley singled against Jannis in the 4th,
went to third on an Eric Haase double, and then came home on a groundout for
the games only run. Other than that Jannis didn’t really face much trouble, but
Manager Luis Rojas chose to take him out after five before he faced the heart
of the Akron lineup again in a one-run game.
The
first two Ponies batters of the game reached on back-to-back walks, so they had
the Akron starter on the ropes, but a double play grounder bailed Lugo out in
that frame, and then he settled down after that. L.J. Mazzilli connected of the
first Bingo hit with two outs in the 3rd. The only other hit Lugo
allowed came when Tomas Nido doubled to knock him out of the game in the 7th.
The final Ponies hit was an 8th inning single off the bat of Gustavo
Nunez.
Rojas’
decision to replace Jannis for the 6th paid off, as Corey Taylor
worked a perfect frame with two strikeouts. Taylor added another strikeout
during a scoreless 7th before giving the ball to Cory Burns for the
8th. The Bingo pen combined for three scoreless, which left the door
open for a potential comeback, but Akron’s pitching finished strong too.
Looking
ahead, the Ponies turn to Corey Oswalt Sunday as they try to salvage a series
split with Akron.
