Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies played a sloppy game in their finale with Charleston
Wednesday night, but the River Dogs needed another walkoff in extra’s to take
the rubber match of this series. The Fireflies made three errors on the field,
three errors on the bases, and allowed fifteen hits to a Charleston lineup that
lost two of its best hitters earlier in the day – Hoy Jun Park and Estevan
Florial were promoted to Tampa. Still, the game was tied 3-3 after nine innings
of play, so the Fireflies had plenty of chances to take control of this game,
they just couldn’t get much going at the plate.
The
Fireflies had a runner erased on the bases in each of the first three innings:
Andres Gimenez took a HBP and was then caught stealing in the 1st;
Ian Strom and Colby Woodmansee connected on back-to-back two out singles in the
2nd, but Strom was thrown out trying to reach third on the play; and
then Gimenez unsuccessfully tried to take second after his 3rd
inning single deflected away from the Charleston SS.
While
the Cola offense was running into outs, the Cola starter was doing his best
Harry Houdini impersonation, as he kept getting himself in-and-out of trouble
with ease. Justin Brantley stranded two runners in scoring position during the
1st and 2nd innings, and then worked around a pair of two
out singles in the 3rd.

Brantley’s impersonation act failed
in the 4th, as the River Dogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Carlos Vidal
provided the first big hit of the frame when he doubled to right field to bring
home Pablo Olivares. During the play, Luis Carpio’s relay throw to third sailed
high and into the dugout, which allowed Vidal to come around and score the
second run of the frame. After getting the second out of the frame, Brantley
walked two straight and then Steven Sensley made him pay with an RBI double.
That
3-0 lead lasted all of five batters for Charleston. Strom and Woodmansee worked
walks to start the 5th and then Arnaldo Berrios reached on an
infield single to load the bases for Vinny Siena. Siena has been struggling
since being promoted from the Fireflies last season, but he came through with a
big two run single against Freicer Perez to get the Fireflies on the board.
They tying run came home on an RBI sac bunt from Gimenez, and just like that
the game was reset.
Taylor
Henry took over for Brantley in the 5th and worked three scoreless
innings. He faced some two out trouble in the 7th, but was overall
very effective and finished with a pair of strikeouts.
The
Fireflies final hit of the game came in the 6th, when Ian Strom hit
one of the softest triples you’ll ever see. Speaks to Strom’s speed and hustle
that he was able to reach third on the hit, as most guys would’ve been happy
settling for two.
Joe
Zanghi was next out of the Cola pen and he worked around three singles for two
scoreless frames, striking out a pair along the way as well. Zanghi’s been
having a very nice season for the Fireflies and he’s really turned it on lately
with six straight scoreless outings: 12 IP, 8 H, 0 R, 14 K: 4 BB.
After
five straight scoreless innings of work, the Cola pen finally stumbled in the
10th. Keaton Aldridge came on for his third relief appearance since
his promotion and just couldn’t get an out. He allowed back-to-back singles to
start the frame – the second of which came on a sac bunt attempt that Aldridge
threw away – was forced to intentionally walk a batter, and then Isiah Gilliam ended
things with a liner into CF.
Looking
ahead, the Fireflies road trip heads to Augusta, Ga next for a weekend series
with the Green Jackets. They return home and to MiLB.tv on Monday, when start a
series with these River Dogs.
