Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies made it three straight over New Hampshire Saturday
night with a 7-2 win over the Fisher Cats. Making just his third start of the
season, Binghamton righty Scarlyn Reyes went a season high six innings for his second
win of the year. David Thompson led the way offensive for the Ponies,
connecting on his ninth homer and 23rd double of the season – both
team highs – and he became the first Binghamton player of the season to reach
50 RBI’s.
Scarlyn Reyes has only had a few
bad outings this year, and all three came during a June that saw him throw just
seven innings, with a four-inning spot start making up most of his work. He was
rather effective over the first two months too (had a 2.13 ERA as late as
5/28), but he wasn’t getting consistent work, and that spot start really seemed
to turn things around for him – note, his game log will suggest a slightly
different story, but the three scoreless innings he’s credited with on 5/13
actually came when the game was finished during his recent hot stretch. The
Mets appear to be stretching him out to start out of necessity, as they are
running out of healthy arms in the system, so hopefully he can build upon his
recent success.
Matt
Oberste singled in his first AB of the game, but it led to nothing. David
Thompson’s first hit of the game led to something though, as he deposited it
over the left field wall for a 1-0 lead.
Reyes
battled a little wildness in the 3rd as the Cats got that run right
back. Derrick Loveless worked a walk against Reyes, advanced to second on a
wild pitch, and then later came around to score on a Richard Urena single.
Luis
Guillorme’s first hit of the game came in the 3rd and it advanced
Dale Burdick to third. Guillorme was out on a fielder’s choice in the frame,
but Burdick came home on that play to give Binghamton a 2-1 lead.
Tomas
Nido doubled that lead with a solo blast of his own in the 4th.
Binghamton
then put this game essentially out of reach with a big 5th inning.
Dale Burdick sparked the rally with another leadoff walk, and again went to
third on a Guillorme single. This time Kevin Kaczmarski singled Burdick home to
make it 4-1. Given his speed limitations and double play tendencies, the Cats
chose to load the bases for Tomas Nido and look for the double play. Nido
thwarted that plan with a fly ball to right field, and Guillorme was able to
come home on the play for another Ponies run. Thompson then capped the scoring
with a two run double to make it 7-1.
Reyes
finished his night with a scoreless 6th inning, thanks in large part to Kevin Kaczmarski and a
double play turned behind him.
With
a comfortable lead and his spot starter giving him six innings, Ponies Manager
Luis Rojas let two lefties that usually work the middle innings finish the job.
Kelly Secrest worked two scoreless and then Ben Griset kept Bingo ahead in the
9th to close out the win.

Looking ahead, the Ponies have a major league vet going for them Sunday as they look for the uncommon four game sweep of New Hampshire. Tommy Milone will start and go about 40 pitches before handing the ball off to Marcos Molina.
