The
Columbia Fireflies got their seven-game home stand started on the right foot
Monday night against Charleston, taking a 6-4 win over the surging River Dogs,
who have been the best team in the SAL during the 2nd half. Cola
starter Justin Brantley went a career high seven innings in what was just his
fifth career start – his fourth since joining the Fireflies to be stretched out
as a starter last month. Meanwhile, Ian Strom stayed hot at the plate and led
the charge offensively, connecting on his first minor league homerun in the 2nd
and then driving home the go-ahead run in the 3rd.
Justin Brantley made it to Double-A as a reliever in the Indians system before they released him midseason last year. He finished the season in Indy ball and then the Mets signed him during Spring Training. He struggled with command in the St. Lucie Mets pen for the first three and a half months of the season, which led to 23 BB in 31.2 IP and contributed to the 5.36 ERA he had when he was sent down. Reports have his fastball at 92-94 (t-96) out of the pen, and suggest he mixes in a slider, cutter, and change. I thought some of his breakers looked like curve's, and the Cola announcers called them curves, so either that's a newer pitch for him or he's good at manipulating his slider.
The River Dogs really battled Brantley over the first two innings, forcing him to throw 41 pitches as they jumped ahead 1-0 early. He allowed a leadoff single to Carlos Vidal in the 1st, but stranded him at second and struck out Isiah Gilliam during the frame.

Dalton
Blaser greeted Brantley with a double in the 2nd, went to third on a
passed ball (which is why the run is unearned), and then came around to score
on a fielder’s choice.
The
lead didn’t last long, just like the ball Ian Strom destroyed in the bottom of
the 2nd didn’t stay in the park for very long. Dan Rizzie followed
with a single, but the Fireflies couldn’t get him home from third with two outs
in the frame.
Justin
Brantley reaaaally settled in after the 2nd. He allowed just two
singles and faced one over the minimum during his final five innings of work,
striking out four more River Doggies along the way.
Brantley’s
time on the mound was made a lot more comfortable after the Fireflies exploded
for five runs in the bottom of the 3rd. The rally started when
Andres Gimenez reached on a HBP. He went to second on a wild pitch, and then to
third as the Fireflies loaded the bases on a Jacob Zanon single. Ian Strom and
Dan Rizzie followed with RBI singles to make it a 4-1 game, and then both ended
up coming around to score as well. Strom came home on a wild pitch, while
Rizzie advanced on a fly out and then came home on an Arnaldo Berrios RBI
single.
The
Fireflies couldn’t add on after the 3rd but they still had a few
hits in their bats: J.J. Franco singled in the 4th and 6th,
Rizzie singled in the 5th, and then Brandon Brosher and Colby
Woodmansee connected on back-to-back singles in the 8th.
Lefty
Taylor Henry was the first out of Cola’s pen and he struck out Diego Castillo
during a scoreless 8th.
Cameron
Griffin’s 9th didn’t go as well, but he struck out Dermis Garcia and
Ryan Lidge, and he had enough run support to withstand the three extra base
hits allowed.
These
two teams go back at again Tuesday, with game time scheduled for 7:05 PM. The
Fireflies welcome Darwin Ramos back to the mound as a starter after he spent
the last six weeks with Brooklyn. Ramos started the season getting a little
work out of the St. Lucie pen in April, was sent to the Cola pen for May, and
was then stretched out as a starter in extended spring training so he could be
a part of the Brooklyn rotation when the Cyclones season started. His first two
starts didn’t go so well, but then he held the NYPL to a .573 OPS over his
final six outings (24.1 IP), with 27 K: 11 BB and just 18 H allowed for a 1.85
ERA during that span.
