Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies streak of great pitching continued Tuesday night, as
they nearly combined to shutout the best team in the Eastern League during a
3-1 win. Robert Gsellman (three innings), Casey Delgado (four), and Tim Peterson
(one) combined for eight shutout innings and handed a 3-0 lead off to Cory
Burns for the 9th, but the Thunder were able to scratch out a run
before Burns racked up his 15th save of the season. Offensively,
Matt Oberste stayed red-hot at the dish with his fourth multi-hit game over the
past week, and he provided some of the legwork during both innings the Ponies
scored runs.
Gsellman
was making his second rehab start with the Ponies and it went much better than
his first one, when he couldn’t make it out of the 1st inning. He
threw strikes, had a solid whiff rate, and finished with two strikeouts over
his three scoreless frames. Both hits allowed came with two outs and he
finished his night with a perfect 3rd.
Binghamton
had a chance to jump ahead in the 1st, when Juan Lagares and Matt
Oberste connected on back-to-back singles, but Binghamton couldn’t get Lagares
home from third.
While
Gsellman was getting congratulations handshakes in the dugout after finishing
his night, the Ponies were going out and taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the
3rd. Luis Guillorme sparked the rally with a leadoff single, moved
up to second base on a Lagares single, to third on a HBP, and then scored on a
bases loaded walk. Lagares scored the second run on a groundout.
Just
like last time Gsellman made a rehab start, Casey Delgado came out of the Bingo
pen for a piggyback start and was very effective. He finished with four
strikeouts over his four scoreless, and the Thunder didn’t really put together
any good scoring threats while he was on the mound,
The
Ponies added an insurance run in the 5th. Luis Guillorme started the
frame by drawing a walk, went to second on Matt Oberste’s second single, and
then Kevin Taylor knocked him in with an RBI single.
After
that, the Ponies managed just two hits: an L.J. Mazzilli double in the 6th
and a David Thompson single in the 8th.
Tim
Peterson worked a perfect 8th in relief of Delgado, but the 9th
didn’t go as smoothly for Cory Burns. He allowed two hits and a walk, and the
Thunder put the tying run on second with two outs in the frame before a pop out
ended things.
Looking
ahead, the Ponies have Corey Oswalt scheduled for game two, and two chances to
take this series from the Eastern League’s best team.
