Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies stayed hot Wednesday night, surging to a 14-5 win in
Erie to wrap up a three-game sweep of the Sea Wolves. Binghamton’s offensive
explosion came without the benefit of a homer and with just four doubles, three
of which came off the bat of Patrick Mazeika. Everyone in Bingo’s lineup got on
base at least once and either scored or knocked in at least one run. All the
offense helped ease the pressure on the Ponies pen, which was tasked with all
nine innings after the Mets sent Seth Lugo to the DL and recalled Robert
Gsellman. The Ponies had three soft-tossing lefties work the first six innings,
and then three flame-throwing righties work the final three.
The
Ponies wasted little time jumping ahead, and their 1st inning rally
started with a very common sight: Luis Guillorme taking a walk. Guillorme now
has 38 walks (and just 19 strikeouts) over his last 46 games (205 PA), which
has pushed him to third overall on the Eastern League walks leaderboard (59). Kevin
Kaczmarski followed by taking his 55th walk of the season, which is
fifth overall. The Ponies got both runners home on back-to-back singles from
Kevin Taylor and Matt Oberste and a groundout to take a 2-0 lead.
Patrick
Biondi connected on his hit for Binghamton in the 2nd, but it led to
nothing. Matt Oberste connected on his second hit for Binghamton in the 3rd,
and it came in the middle of a push for another run. Taylor walked ahead of the
Oberste hit, and then Tomas Nido singled him home two batters after the Oberste
hit.
Kelly
Secrest has never been a starter in the minors, but he did a great job giving Binghamton
three scoreless frames to start the nights. He struck out a pair and worked
around a pair of base runners during his outing to keep the Ponies ahead 3-0.
Ben
Griset took over in the 4th and worked around some two out trouble
for a scoreless frame – he struck out two in the inning.
Binghamton
took control of this game with a crazy seven-run 5th that featured:
a Kevin Taylor single, a David Thompson HBP, Tomas Nido working a walk (#24 for
him against 48 strikeouts), a throwing error on the first baseman, the first
Patrick Mazeika double of the night (for two runs), a fielding error on the SS,
an RBI single from Kevin Kaczmarski, Taylor working a walk his second time up
(45 K: 45 BB in 95 G), and, finally, a two-run single for Matt Oberste to make
it 10-0. Yowza!
After
all that waiting in the dugout, Griset quickly retired the first two in the
bottom of the 5th before running into trouble. He allowed A.J.
Simcox to reach on a walk, and then Dawel Lugo followed with a double to put
two runners in scoring position. Mike Gerber was up next and he came through
with a two-run single.
Mazeika
connected on another double in the 6th.
P.J.
Conlon provided a scoreless inning of relief in the bottom of the 6th,
striking out Zack Cox along the way.
Taylor’s
next hit came in the 7th.
Drew
Smith took over in the bottom of the 7th and struck out multiple
batters in an outing for the first time at a level above High-A (his tenth such
appearance).
The
Ponies final scoring outburst came in the 8th and featured another
Mazeika double. Nido (HBP) and Nunez (single) were on ahead of Mazeika’s
double, but only Nido scored on it. Kaczmarski knocked in both Nunez and
Mazeika with a double of his own later in the frame, and then Taylor followed
with his fourth hit of the game to make it 14-2.
Tyler
Bashlor, who has been lights out since joining Binghamton, contributed to the
pen game with a perfect 8th, although he didn’t finish with a
strikeout for the first time since his promotion. The last time Bashlor didn’t
strike someone out during an appearance was on 7/20 (his last game with St.
Lucie), but he only faced one batter that night. The last time he didn’t strike
someone out in an outing that lasted at least 1 IP was on 6/24.
Corey
Taylor struggled in the 9th, but he was left out there to work
through his problems given the situation. Erie scored three runs on a double, a
walk, three straight singles and then a sac fly, but they still came up nine
runs shy of a tie.
Looking
ahead, the Ponies get a much-needed day off to prepare themselves for five
games against Portland in three days this weekend.
