Harol
Gonzalez turned in another strong out for the Columbia Fireflies Wednesday
night, leading them to a 3-0 win over rival Charleston in the rubber-match of
this three game series. Gonzalez finished six innings for a 13th
straight start and then turned things over to the bullpen, which has been
ridiculous this season: down to a 2.53 ERA over 337.1 IP, with 368 K: 113 BB
and just 281 H allowed (per the Cola game
notes). River Dogs starter Nick Nelson finished with eight strikeouts over
his five innings of work, but the Fireflies got to him for a pair of runs and
he got no run support. Jacob Zanon led the way offensive with three hits plus
two stolen bases, and Ian Strom stayed hot with another multi-hit game – that’s
six multi-hit games over his last ten starts (1.132 OPS over 43 PA, 6 SB).
Harol
G came out firing, striking out Pablo Olivares during a quick and perfect 1st
inning. He randomly lost control for back-to-back walks in the 2nd,
but then went back to being as efficient as ever again after that.
Zanon
started his big game with a single in the 2nd. He then stole second
base (his 23rd stolen base of the year), went to third on a wild
pitch, and came home on a Jay Jabs RBI single. Reed Gamache followed with a
single to load the bases, but the final two Cola hitters of the frame went down
swinging to end the threat.
Strom
connected on his first hit of the game in the 3rd and it went for a
double. Zanon singled him home with two outs in the frame to make it a 2-0 game
(he also added another stolen base).
Gonzalez
worked around a leadoff single to keep Charleston off the scoreboard in the 3rd.
Dogs third baseman Dermis Garcia coaxed a two out walk out of Harol in the 4th
and Chris Hess followed with a single into CF, but those were the last two base
runners to reach fairly against Gonzalez in the game (one more reached on an
E3). He struck out Steven Sensley in the 4th, Ryan Lidge in the 5th,
and then Sensley and Garcia in the 6th, which pushed his strikeout
total to five for the night.
The
Fireflies added one more insurance run after Harol G left. Zanon started the
bottom of the 6th with a double, went to third on a fly out, and
then came home on a wild pitch to make it 3-0. They later got singles from Reed
Gamache and Ian Strom, and Strom stole second after reaching on his hit.
Taylor
Henry was the first reliever out of Columbia’s pen Wednesday night and he went
two scoreless. He gave way to Matt Blackham in the 9th and Blackham
made quick work of the dogs. He struck out two during a ten-pitch frame, which
puts him at 71 K: 17 BB in 48 IP this year, with just 33 H allowed (.196
average against) and a 1.69 ERA.
Looking
ahead, the Fireflies welcome Hickory into town for a weekend series Thursday
night. Game one is scheduled for 7:05 PM but the Fireflies haven’t announced
any starter’s for the series yet.
