Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s let a win slip through their fingers Saturday night in El Paso,
taking a 4-3 loss in game two with the Chihuahuas despite holding a 3-0 lead
with four outs to go. Ricky Knapp went 110 pitches while taking a shutout into
the 8th, but he couldn’t finish the frame, and four outs was one too
many to ask of Jamie Callahan on this night. Kevin Plawecki and Josh Rodriguez
both finished with multiple hits, including a double, while Gavin Cecchini and
Matt Reynolds combined for all three Las Vegas RBI’s.
Plaw
started his night with a 1st inning single.
The
51s jumped ahead 2-0 in the 2nd, and Josh Rodriguez got things
started in the frame with a one-out single. J Rod went to third on a Cody
Decker single, and then both J Rod and Decker came home later in the frame on a
Gavin Cecchini single.
Ricky
Knapp struck out a batter during a perfect 1st, but El Paso
threatened by loading the bases against him in the 2nd. He helped
loading the bases by intentionally walking the #8 hitter, and then he struck
out El Paso’s starter Jordan Lyles to get through the frame unscored upon, so
it worked out. They did finally break through against Knapp on a two out RBI
triple in the 8th, but this was El Paso’s best scoring chance
against him all day.
J
Rod’s double came leading off the 4th, but he was stranded at third
in the frame. Plawecki’s double came with two outs in the 5th and he
never made it beyond second base.
El
Paso reliever Michael Kelly was in his third inning of work when the 51s added
onto their lead with a run in the 6th. Kelly walked three straight
with two outs and then Matt Reynolds came through with the RBI single to make
this a 3-0 game. Unfortunately Ricky Knapp was the base runner at second for
Reynolds hit, so the 51s weren’t going to risk sending him on a single.
After
issuing the intentional walk in the 2nd, Knapp retired 17 of the
next 19 batters he faced, which took him into the 8th. Knapp allowed
a one out single in the 8th and Franchy Cordero tripled that run
home after Cruzado fell down in CF – his 14th triple of the season!
Jamie
Callahan took over for Knapp with Cordero on third and struck out Christian
Villanueva to end the frame. He stayed out there for the 9th and
pinch-hitter Ryan Schimpf greeted him with a monster shot to right center
field, which made this a 3-2 game. Callahan would strikeout two of the next
three batters, but then Nick Buss reached on a single to put the tying run into
scoring position. With the game on the line, Callahan got a grounder to third
that should’ve ended things, but the 51s botched the force out on an E4. The
tying run came home on that play, but Callahan still had a chance to send this
game to extras. Unfortunately for Las Vegas, 51s killer Franchy Cordero came
through with a walkoff RBI single for El Paso.
Looking
ahead, the 51s will look to Mitch Atkins Sunday as they try to bounce back from
this tough defeat and get the edge back in this four-game series.
