Recapish
After
finishing another rough home stand with a win Thursday, the Las Vegas 51s
started their road trip with an 8-7 win over El Paso Friday. Rain knocked 51s
starter Wilfredo Boscan out in the 2nd, but the Las Vegas pen was just
effective enough over seven-plus innings to hold on for the win. The top three
hitters in the 51s lineup combined for nine of the teams sixteen hits, but it
was actually the 7-8 hitters that provided half the scoring for Las Vegas. Cody
Decker and Victor Cruzado combined to reach base five times and made it around
for a score in four of those instances. Kevin McGowan wrapped things up with a
scoreless 9th for his fourth save of the year and has since been
called up, so he may be done with Las Vegas for 2017.
This
game had a back-and-forth feel to it, but the 51s were ahead for most of the
game. Gavin Cecchini started the game with a double and Matt Reynolds singled
him home to make it 1-0 before an out was recorded. Reynolds was caught
stealing in the frame but Travis Taijeron added a solo blast to double the 51s
output.
Franchy
Cordero took Boscan deep to start the bottom of the 1st, cutting the
51s lead in half, but then Boscan retired five of six batters before the rains
came.
Victor
Cruzado doubled the 51s score with a two-run shot in the 2nd, his
seventh homer of the season. Cecchini, Reynolds, and Phillip Evans connected on
three straight two-out singles later in the frame for another run, which made
this a 5-1 game.
Kyle
Regnault took over for Boscan after the rain stopped and he quickly retired
four straight out of the pen.
The
51s didn’t score again until they put three on the board again in the 6th,
but they got a hit in each inning between the three-run frames: Xorge Carrillo
singled in the 3rd, Gavin Cecchini singled in the 4th,
and Phillip Evans singled in the 5th.
Since
Regnault’s outing started so well, Manager Pedro Lopez tried to get another
inning out of him in the 4th. Regnault hit a bit of a speed bump,
however, allowing a run on four singles before a double play grounder ended the
frame and his outing.
Luis
Mateo took over on the mound for Las Vegas in the 5th and El Paso
was quick to pounce on him for a run. The first three batters reached on
back-to-back singles and an RBI double, and although Mateo settled down after
that, all three runners came around to score and make this a 5-5 game.
That
tie did not last long, however, as Cody Decker started the 6th with
a solo blast. Las Vegas added two key insurance runs after that, and Victor
Cruzado got that little rally started with a single. Jeff Glenn followed with a
pinch hit double to get Cruzado to third, and then Cruzado came home on a
groundout. Evans came through with a two out single for the final Vegas run of the
game.
New
dad Ben Rowen took over for Las Vegas in the 6th and quickly retired
the first two before running into some trouble. Cordero connected on a two out
triple and then Diego Goris singled him home to make it 8-6.
Reynolds
added an 8th inning single for the 51s, but this time he was picked
off by former Mets prospect Cory Mazzoni.
Alberto
Baldonado started the bottom of the 8th with a strikeout, but Chase
d’Arnaud took him deep during the frame to make this a one-run game.
Fortunately
for Las Vegas, Kevin McGowan came in for the 9th and shut El Paso
down. He finished the game with back-to-back strikeouts to (hopefully) cap off
a pretty strong debut season in the PCL. His 4.06 ERA may not seem impressive, but
that’s much better than the PCL league average of 4.81. Plus, he allowed 60 H
in 62 IP and finished with 55 K: 24 BB, which is in line with what he did in
Double-A last year. (Update: he was optioned down, but he'll be back).
Looking
ahead, the 51s will look to make it three straight wins Saturday behind Ricky
Knapp, who’s been on a roll lately.
