Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies took the series finale in Akron Wednesday afternoon
3-2 behind another great outing from their starter. Corey Oswalt got the nod
for Binghamton in this one and he worked his magic for seven strikeouts over
six very strong innings, nearly matching the total of nine from both starters
(Marcos Molina and Mickey Jannis) that pitched in the double-header on Tuesday.
With the win, Binghamton took the series three-games-to-one and improved to
56-44 on the season. Matt Oberste led the way offensive, scoring the first two
Binghamton runs and knocking in the final one on a three-hit game. It was a
tight battle throughout the night, but the Ponies struck last and prevailed.
Binghamton
also struck first in this one, jumping ahead 1-0 in the 1st. Matt
Oberste kept the frame alive with a two out single and then Kevin Taylor
tripled him home for the lead.
The
Ducks answered right back with their only run against Oswalt in the bottom of
the 1st. It came on an Eric Haase homerun, his 20th of
the season, and the eighth homer Oswalt has allowed in now 96.2 IP. Oswalt
responded with a strikeout of Bobby Bradley and was mostly in cruise control
after that.
David
Thompson doubled to start the 2nd inning, but Binghamton couldn’t
get him in from third with less than two outs.
Oswalt
was helped through the bottom of the 2nd inning when he and catcher
Tomas Nido combined on a K/CS double play. That strikeout started a stretch
during which Oswalt struck out four of six batters.
The
Ponies bats stayed quiet until the 6th, when Matt Oberste doubled
with one out and ended up on third after an E8. He came home on a wild pitch
before Kevin Taylor’s AB was over to make it a 2-1 game.
Oswalt
finished his night with two strikeouts during a scoreless 6th and
left with that 2-1 lead.
Tim
Peterson took over for Oswalt in the 7th and retired six of seven
batters faced with a stretch of three straight strikeouts. Unfortunately, the
one batter who reached was the first batter he faced, and Yu-Cheng Chang
doubled and came around to score the tying run against Peterson in the 7th.
As
soon as Akron had tied things up again, the Ponies were back on the attack and
taking the lead right back. Champ Stuart sparked the final run with a leadoff
single in the 8th and then stole second to get himself into scoring
position with zero outs. Champ would advance to third on a groundout and then
Matt Oberste singled him home to make it 3-2. The Ponies were threatening for
more, but then Taylor grounded into an inning ending double play.
Cory
Burns finished things off for Binghamton in the 9th, stranding the
tying run at third base for his 13th save of the season.
Looking
ahead, the Ponies head home to host the Fisher Cats Thursday and Robert
Gsellman will begin his rehab with the team.
