Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies wasted one of their best starts of the season Tuesday
evening in Akron, dropping game one of their double-header 1-0 after Marcos
Molina gave them six sparkling shutout innings. Molina finished with a Double-A
high nine strikeouts while allowing just three singles, but Akron starter Shane
Bieber matched him scoreless inning for scoreless inning. The originally
scheduled seven-inning game went into ‘extras,’ as it was tied after seven, and
the Rubber Ducks would eventually walk off with a 1-0 win in nine innings.
Luis
Guillorme led off both the 1st and 3rd innings with
singles, but the Ponies couldn’t even advance him to second base.
The
Ponies best chance to score came in the 2nd, when they connected for
three singles, but they left the bases loaded in the frame. Kevin Taylor
started the inning with a single, and then Gustavo Nunez and Patrick Biondi
singled later in the frame.
After that, there was no more offense
from Binghamton.
Marcos
Molina retired the first seven batters of the game and struck out three in the
3rd, but he had to work around a pair of singles in that frame. He
finished his outing by retiring eleven of the final twelve Akron batters he
faced. His fastball velocity isn’t back yet, but his secondaries were very
effective in this one, so enjoy.
After
Molina came Ben Griset for the 7th. Griset retired four of six
batters faced, but walked the other two and left with one on and one out in the
8th.
Corey
Taylor finished off the 8th for Griset but then ran into trouble
during the 9th. Eric Haase, who struck out three times against
Molina, started the frame with a single, went to second base on a fly out to
CF, on to third on another single, and then came home on a walkoff sac fly.
After
taking a tough loss in game one, the Ponies gave the ball to Mickey Jannis as
they looked to avoid the sweep in game two.
