Recapish
Robert
Gsellman couldn’t make it through the 1st inning of his first rehab
outing with Binghamton Thursday night, but the Rumble Ponies were able to
bounce back from multiple deficits in this one for a 6-4 win. Gsellman needed
26 pitches for the two outs he recorded, but he did finish on a high note by
striking out Emilio Guerrero, and the Ponies were only down 1-0 after he left.
Casey Delgado stranded the runners Gsellman left and gave Binghamton some
length in a very effective piggyback start, which was a huge factor in the win.
The other huge factor was Matt Oberste, who continues to rake at the plate, and
who launched a three run bomb in the 6th to make this a 6-3 game.
Although
the final line isn’t pretty, it wasn’t too ugly for Gsellman. He walked one,
struck out one, and induced four groundballs; it just so happened that three of
those grounders found holes.
The
Ponies were quick to get that run back in the bottom of the 1st, and
I do mean quick. Champ Stuart worked a walk to start the frame, but then he
turned on the jets for two stolen bases, which allowed him to come home on a
Luis Guillorme groundout.
Casey
Delgado ran into some trouble in the 2nd, though he probably
should’ve escaped the jam with zero runs allowed. Tim Lopez double Jonathan
Davis to third with two outs, and then Davis came home on a passed ball from
Tyler Moore to put the Cats back on top 2-1.
Binghamton
again answered with a run of their own in the bottom half, and again the Ponies
frame started with a walk and stolen base. This time it was Kevin Kaczmarski
who got the inning started, and he eventually came around on a Moore sac fly.
Kevin
Taylor singled in the 3rd and Tyler Moore in the 4th, but
neither hit led to anything for Binghamton.
Delgado
had one more troublesome inning, when the Fisher Cats took their third lead of
the game in the 5th. The trouble started when Delgado walked Anthony
Alford with one out in the frame, although Alford was actually thrown out
trying to reach third base on the Harold Ramirez hit that followed. The OF
assist went to Champ Stuart, but Ramirez wisely went up to second on the throw.
That allowed Ramirez to score when Lourdes Gurriel followed with a single through
the middle, which made this a 3-2 game.
Matt
Oberste doubled in the bottom of the 5th and it looked like the
Ponies might answer back with an immediate run again, but Binghamton couldn’t
get him around to score this time.
The
Ponies had plenty of base runners against Cats starter Conner Greene Thursday
night (he walked six), but they could only muster three hits against him over his six
innings, so Greene left with a 3-2 lead. The Ponies also had plenty of base
runners against the Cats first reliever, Kender Villegas – well, four, but in
just the one frame – and they got all of them home to take a 6-3 lead. Oberste
capped the scoring and the frame with a three run bomb to left center, his
fifth homer of the season.
After
his team took the lead, Casey Delgado went out for one more scoreless frame
before handing the ball off to the regular Binghamton bullpen. Corey Taylor was
the first Bingo reliever out of the pen, but he struggled a little on this
night. He allowed a solo blast to Emilio Guerrero and had to be relieved with
the bases loaded and two outs in the 9th. Fortunately for the
Binghamton faithful in attendance, closer Cory Burns came in to put out the
fire for his 14th save of the season. Burns had some hiccups with
Binghamton early, but he’s been much more reliable over the past month-plus.
Looking
ahead, the Ponies will give the ball to P.J. Conlon Friday as they look to jump
ahead 2-0 in the series.
