Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s let their tacos get a little toasty early Tuesday night before
stuffing them full of runs in the 4th. Fresno – playing as the Tacos
instead of the Grizzlies – would come back to tie the game at five in the 6th,
but that tie was short-lived, and the 51s pen did the rest. Kyle Regnault went
a season high 3 IP for Las Vegas in the win and Jamie Callahan bounced back
from a rough last outing in El Paso to earn his first save since the Mets
traded for him.
Both
sides went down pretty quietly over the first two innings. Travis Taijeron
singled in the 2nd and Victor Cruzado connected on one in the 3rd,
but the 51s did not score first in this game.
After
quickly retiring the first six batters of the game, 51s starter Donovan Hand
ran into problems right away in the 3rd (and 4th and 5th).
Drew Ferguson started the frame with a double for Fresno and then Alejandro
Garcia worked a walk two batters later. Fortunately, Hand picked Ferguson off
at second, but unfortunately, both Xorge Carrillo and Matt Reynolds committed
errors shortly after the pickoff, which allowed Garcia to score.
Las
Vegas struck for five runs on just two hits in the 4th to jump
ahead. Phil Evans had the first hit early in the frame – a single in a sea of
walks – and then Xorge Carrillo provided the muscle later in the frame with a
grand slam (his eighth homer of the year).
The
5-1 lead slowly disappeared over the next three frames, as Fresno rallied for
four runs to pull even. The first three of those runs came against Hand: A.J.
Reed went deep for the 26th time this year in the 4th and
then Jack Mayfield doubled home a run during a two-run 5th for
Fresno.
Matt
Reynolds singled for Las Vegas in the 5th.
Kyle
Regnault took over on the mound for the 51s in the 6th and Fresno
completed their comeback by greeting him with a run on three straight singles.
Regnault bounced back to retire the next nine Fresno batters in a row and he
went a season-high 3 IP to bridge the gap to Jamie Callahan. Regnault finished
the stretch with an exclamation point by striking out two of three in the 8th.
Gavin
Cecchini snapped a string of six straight Las Vegas strikeouts by tripling to
keep the top of the 7th inning alive. Cecchini came home on an RBI
infield single for Matt Reynolds to push the 51s back in front 6-5.
The
score stayed that way through the 9th, when Callahan was given a
third save opportunity since joining the 51s. Las Vegas had been 1-1 in his
first two chances, but he blew both of them (his first two blown saves of the
year), so I’m sure he wanted to go out there and prove himself. I’m guessing
first-place Fresno was aware of that as well, and they are in a heated battle
with Reno for a playoff spot (tied after this game). Callahan did allow a
one-out single, but he then struck out A.J. Reed and Preston Tucker to end the
game, and both are tough lefties who especially love to beat up right-handed
pitchers.
Looking
ahead, the 51s send Wilfredo Boscan to the mound in game two of this series.
With less than a week to go, we're wondering "weather" there will be clear skies for the eclipse: https://t.co/lqNq4ljKfO #eclipse2017 pic.twitter.com/MFUXMOmDIw— Sky & Telescope (@SkyandTelescope) August 16, 2017
