Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s dropped their finale with El Paso 10-7 Monday night, as the
mighty Chihuahuas bats force a four-game series split. Making his fourth start
since joining the team, 51s starter Jonathan Albaladejo struggled for a second
straight outing, allowing nine runs (all earned) over just four innings of
work. He was so effective to start his 51s career that he earned PCL Pitcher of
the Week honors, but the reality of pitching in the PCL has come up and hit
Albaladejo square in the ERA. The two sides battled for control early,
combining for six-multi run frames over the first four innings, and it was the
Chiahuahuas who won the early battle, and then the game.
The
Chihuahuas scored multiple runs with at least one extra base hit in each of the
four frames Albaladejo pitched in: Chase d’Arnaud connected on an RBI triple in
the 1st, Travis Jankowski and Franchy Cordero combined for three
RBI’s on a pair of doubles in the 2nd, Dillon Overton doubled home a
pair in the 3rd, and then Ryan Schimpf took him deep for two more
runs in the 4th. With starting pitching like that, there’s not much
you can do.
The
51s did match El Paso early, tying things up in both the top of the 2nd
and the top of the 3rd, but they couldn’t match the Chihuahuas early
torrid pace. Boyd connected on his first triple of the year in the 2nd,
scored on a Cody Decker double, and then Jio Mier knocked Decker in to tie
things at two.
With
two on (both walked) and two outs in the 3rd, it was Boyd and Decker
again providing the big hits – Boyd an RBI single, Decker a two-run double. The
51s bats stayed quiet after that until the 8th.
The 51s pen was solid over four innings
Monday, allowing just a 6th inning run that Chase d’Arnaud earned
the hard way. He worked a walk against Beck Wheeler, stole two bases, and then
came home on a single.
Logan
Taylor took over for Wheeler in the 7th and worked around an E4 for
a scoreless frame.
The
51s put a little pressure on with two runs in the 8th to make this a
10-7 game, but that was as close as it would get. Kevin Plawecki went deep for
his ninth PCL homer of the year and then Mier singled home Travis Taijeron
(walk) later in the frame. Plaw added a 9th inning single to his
tally, but the 51s left the bases loaded in the frame.
Luis
Mateo worked a scoreless 8th for Las Vegas, striking out d’Arnaud
along the way.
Looking
ahead, the 51s travel to Frenso Tuesday to begin a mid-week series with the
Grizzlies. Donovan Hand is scheduled for Las Vegas in the opener, with game
time set for 10:05 PM.
