Recapish
Playing
in their first close game since closer Adonis Uceta was promoted to the St.
Lucie Mets, the Columbia Fireflies pen couldn’t shut the door as the Green
Jackets came back for a 6-5 win. It was just the team’s ninth blown save in 101
games this year (and that’s counting all innings, not just the 9th),
which seems like a good rate. Also, there were multiple 9th inning
mistakes that led to both Augusta runs being unearned, so new closer Matt
Pobereyko’s pitching is not entirely to blame (he did make one of those
mistakes). The Fireflies used two scoring outbursts to take a 5-4 lead into the
9th, but couldn’t get much going after their 9th inning
miscues.
Cola’s
leadoff man Andres Gimenez has been hot in July and reached base all four times
he went to the plate Friday. He led off the 1st with a single and
Jacob Zanon singled him to second in the frame, but the Cola threat was cut
short by a double play.
Cola
starter Justin Brantley was relieving for St. Lucie most of the season but was
sent down to start for Columbia because the team is in need of starters. This
was his second start and the broadcaster’s suggested he’s being stretched out
to finish the season as a starter. Brantley worked a perfect 1st but
ran into trouble right away in the 2nd. He walked the leadoff batter
and than Jose Vizcaino Jr. tripled home the run to give Augusta the lead.
Vizcaino came home on a groundout to make it 2-0, and then Brantley finished
the frame with a strikeout.
The
Fireflies wasted little time getting those runs back thanks to slugger Brandon
Brosher. It appears like Brosher will get the majority of the playing time at
first base with Dash Winningham on the DL, and his bat appears to be benefitting
from the move away from catcher. As of 7/31, he’s played just 9 of 28 games at
catcher over the past two months and he has hit three doubles and seven homers
for a .791 OPS during that span. There’s probably too much swing-and-miss in
his game anyway, but maybe he can benefit from playing everyday in August and
put up a big final month.
After
Jay Jabs led off the 2nd with a single, Brosher launched his ninth
homer of the year to tie the game at two. Colby Woodmansee connected on his
single two batters later.
The
Green Jackets got their two-run lead right back in the 3rd. Again
Brantley walked the leadoff batter, and then two sac’s and two singles later it
was a 4-2 game.
Brantley
was able to work around a leadoff double in the 4th to keep Augusta
off the board for one more frame before leaving with his pitch count up to 65.
Keaton
Aldridge was first out of the Cola pen making his SAL debut and the converted
catcher tossed two scoreless frames.
Andres
Gimenez sparked the second Cola rally of the game with a leadoff single in the
6th He stole second – his tenth stolen base – and then came around
to score on a Luis Carpio double. After a pitching change, Jacob Zanon reached
on an infield single, and then he and Carpio eventually came around to score on
a pair of wild pitches. Take a tour of the bases with Andres Gimenez below...
With
the Fireflies up 5-4, Joe Zanghi came out of the pen for the 7th.
Zanghi struck out Carlos Garcia to start the frame and Dan Rizzie caught a
runner stealing to help him through a scoreless frame.
Matt
Blackham worked the 8th and needed little help from his defense, as
he struck out two of three batters faced during a quick frame.
Matt
Pobereyko has been lights out since the Mets signed him out of Indy ball, but
the Green Jackets scratched out a pair of runs against him for the come back in
this one. Christian Paulino led off with a single grounded through the left
side and then stole second. Pobereyko was able to induce a pop out from the next
batter, but then a Rizzie passed ball opened the door Paulino to go to third with
less than two outs anyway. Paulino ended up coming home on a sac fly to tie the
game, but the other run was more on Pobereyko. He ended up walking Carlos
Garcia after the passed ball, and then Garcia came around to score on a
Pobereyko throwing error with two outs in the frame. The nightmarish inning
finally came to an end when Skyler Ewing went down swinging.
Brosher
led off the 9th with a single, but that was all the Cola bats could
muster after a potential win was snatched from them.
Looking
ahead, the Fireflies give the ball to Harol Gonzalez, who has become the most
reliable starter in the rotation during the second half.
