Recapish
After
struggling for just one run over their final 25 innings against Akron pitching,
the Binghamton Rumble Ponies exploded for ten runs on 18 hits for a win in
their opener with Erie Monday night. Luis Guillorme and Patrick Mazeika led the
way offensively, combining to reach base ten times, and combining for three
doubles, three walks, and three runs knocked in, plus they each scored a run. Tommy
Milone continued his rehab efforts with Binghamton and Erie got to him for five
homeruns, but they were all solo blasts and he still left with an 8-6 lead.
The
Ponies onslaught started right away, as they had a bunch of hits ready to pour
out of their bats after that Akron series. Luis Guillorme started his big night
with a leadoff single, advanced to third on a Kevin Kaczmarski single, and then
came home on a Kevin Taylor RBI single. Matt Oberste kept the train rolling
with an RBI single of his own, and then Patrick Mazeika capped the rally with a
“Welcome to Double-A” RBI double to start his Ponies career.
For
Milone, homers are always going to be the concern. He does a good job of
stranding runners usually, as long as he doesn’t give up a homerun. Fortunately
for him, the homerun derby Erie put on against him came on a night when his
teammates put up ten runs, so he was able to stay out there working on his
game. This game reminds me of an old line first relayed by one of the Mets
older broadcasters: “[Some starter] came into the dugout down 9-0 after the 1st
and told his teammates, ‘Ya know, I’ve never lost a game when my team scored
ten runs.’”
Patrick
Biondi and Luis Guillorme started the Bingo 2nd with back-to-back
singles, and then Biondi came home on a force out. Kevin Taylor added a single
in the frame.
Mazeika
made it 2-2 with two doubles when he started the 3rd with one to
right field. Tyler Moore singled him to third two batters later and then
Patrick Biondi doubled them both home.
It
was Biondi and Guillorme sparking a run together again in the 5th.
Biondi single with one out and then Guillorme doubled him home. Kacz followed
with an infield single, which advanced Guillorme to third, but a double play
grounder cut the rally short.
David
Thompson joined the party with a walk in the 6th. He then went to
third on a Mazeika single and scored on an RBI single from Gustavo Nunez.
The
Ponies bats had a little spark left in them for the 8th. Moore
doubled home Nunez (fielder’s choice), and Guillorme singled Moore home two
batters later.

Tyler
Bashlor took over for Milone after the Bingo starter’s pitch count surpassed
100 pitches in the 7th. He struck out Gabriel Quintana to end that
frame and then worked a scoreless 8th. The announcer’s had him up to
98 MPH with his fastball, as Bashlor continues to show no problems adjusting to
the Double-A life (13 K: 2 BB, 4 H, 0 R over 8.2 IP).

For
a second straight appearance, P.J. Conlon came out of the Bingo pen for the 9th.
He started his pro career with a very successful stint in the Cyclones career,
and that may ultimately be his role in the majors too, but this move is likely
more about limiting his innings than suddenly switching him to the closer’s
role. Just like last season, Conlon racked up a lot of innings over the first
four months of the year, and this year he’s on a Ponies team with a chance to
play into mid-September if they make it to the Eastern League Finals. Conlon
made just one appearance out of the pen for St. Lucie down the stretch last
year, and it lasted three innings, but he had his pitch limit reduced over the
final five weeks. As for the numbers, Conlon finished with 142 IP across two
levels last year, and he’s up to 127.2 IP in 2017 after this appearance.
Back
to this game, Conlon worked a perfect 9th to close out the win.
Looking
ahead, the Ponies hope to make it two in a row in Erie Tuesday night behind
Casey Delgado.
