Recapish

The Brooklyn Cyclones let one slip away in Aberdeen Sunday evening, dropping the series opener with the Iron Birds 7-6 after holding leads of 3-0 and 6-4. Jose Carlos Medina made the start for Brooklyn and had his second straight rough outing in the loss. The Fireflies held a 6-4 lead for a little after Medina left, but then the Iron Birds got a lucky bounce against Tony Dibrell in the 7th to tie it, and took advantage of some wildness from Cannon Chadwick in the 9th for a walkoff.
After starting the season with a 2.41 ERA and 21 K: 5 BB through six starts, Jose Carlos Medina has allowed nine runs (seven earned) over his last two outings (7.2 IP), with just three strikeouts against fifteen hits and two walks allowed. He retired the first six in a row before things got ugly Sunday, striking out one and inducing four groundouts along the way.

While Medina was mowing down the Birds for two innings, the Cyclones were building up a 3-0 lead. They scored two runs in the 2nd on two singles and a lot of help from Aberdeen. There was a walk, a wild pitch, an E9 after the first hit, a passed ball, and an error on a pickoff attempt during the frame – hey, that’s short season baseball for ya.

Brooklyn added a run on just one single in the 3rd. Walter Rasquin reached second on an E8 and Quinn Brodey singled him home to make it a 3-0 game.

Markel Jones started the bottom of the 3rd with a triple as Aberdeen quickly got all three runs back. They scored the three runs on three more singles and a sac fly before Medina ended the frame.
T.J. Nichting greeted Medina with a double to start the 4th and the Birds got him home to take their first lead of the game at 4-3.

But the Cyclones had some fight in their lineup on this night and would charge right back ahead in the 5th. Leon Byrd started the frame with a double, went to third on a sac bunt, and then came home on a fielder’s choice. With two outs in the frame, Quinn Brodey stole second and then came around to score the go ahead run on a strikeout/E2. The Cyclones made that mistake count twice when Jeremy Wolf followed with an RBI double to make this a 6-3 game. Also shown below is a single from Cecilio Aybar.

Cyclones Manager Edgardo Alfonzo brought in his newest reliever for the 5th and the Mets 10th round pick from this past draft did not disappoint. After a very strong pro debut with Kingsport over the past month-plus, Stephen Villines struck out five of seven batters faced in his NYPL debut.

Villines would hand the ball off to the Mets 4th round pick from this past draft, Tony Dibrell, who has struggled a bit with Brooklyn this season. I’m not concerned about struggles in short season ball – college clips I saw of Dibrell looked very nice – but Dibrell did run into trouble again in this outing. Kirvin Moesquit connected on a two out double to put two in scoring position against Dibrell, and then Mason McCoy knocked both runners in with a one-hopper off Dibrell’s legs. Dibrell recovered the ball in time to maybe have a play at home, but his throw home went awry and both runners came home safely.

Dibrell struck out three total Sunday but he ran into trouble again during the 8th and Cannon Chadwick had to bail him out. Chadwick came in with two on and two out and would strike out Garrett Copeland to end the threat.

Unfortunately for Chadwick, the 9th did not go as well. He walked the first two batters and then Ben Breazeale singled home the winning run for an Aberdeen walkoff.
Looking ahead, the Cyclones will get a ‘rehab’ appearance from Colin Holderman Monday as they look to even the series with Aberdeen.
