Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies had a chance to sweep the Trenton Thunder Thursday
night in game two of their double-header, but P.J. Conlon had a rare bad
double-header outing in the nightcap, and the Ponies bats were quieted. Conlon
had been the king of the double-header over his first six such starts this year
– 37.1 IP, 4 R (3 ER), 34 K: 8 BB, 23 H, 3 seven-inning shutouts – but the
Thunder had his kryptonite in this one: Nick Solak. Solak homered and then
doubled off of Conlon, which played a huge role in the 4-1 lead that Trenton
built up against the Ponies southpaw starter. The Bingo bats showed some signs
of life early before sputtering out, and they managed just one single over
their final 15 outs.
It
was just his second game since being promoted, but Nick Solak wasted little
time showing the Eastern League what he can do. He took P.J. Conlon deep for
his first Double-A homerun in the 1st, which gave the Thunder a 1-0
lead.
Kevin Taylor singled for Binghamton
in the 1st, but it came with two outs and he stayed on first base.
David
Thompson doubled leading off the 2nd and Binghamton got him home to
tie the game on a groundout and Tyler Moore sac fly.
Conlon
had zero clean innings Thursday, but he was able to work around a leadoff single
in both the 2nd and 4th innings. Trenton also led off the
3rd inning with a single, and Conlon couldn’t wiggle his way out of
that jam. Solak followed with his first Double-A double of his career, but it
was Zack Zehner who provided the biggest hit of the frame: a two run double
that made this a 4-1 game.
Patrick
Biondi led off the 3rd with a hustle double for the Ponies, but he’d
end up stranded at third base. After that, the only Ponies hit was a Kevin
Kaczmarski single in the 6th.
Corey
Taylor was the first reliever out of the Binghamton pen all day and he gave the
Ponies two scoreless innings of relief, although he did have to work around
some trouble in the 6th. Taylor handed the ball off to Tyler
Bashlor, and the flame throwing righty was hitting 96-97 as he struck out the
final two batters of the game.
Looking
ahead, the Ponies head on the road for a weekend series in Harrisburg before
returning home to host Erie next week. Although they couldn’t finish the sweep (of
the double-header or the series) the Ponies had a very successful home stand –
they won five of seven games – and they head to Harrisburg looking for a fourth
straight series win.
