The path to the Mets:
The Red Sox drafted Stephen Nogosek in the 6th round of the 2016
draft out of the University of Oregon and sent him to the NYPL to begin his pro
career. He was good enough out of the gates that the Red Sox let him finish the
year in the SAL. He was back in the SAL to start 2017, but it wasn’t long
before he was promoted to the Carolina League, which is the same level as the
St. Lucie Mets.
The stuff: Nogosek
is a four-pitch reliever who throws a two-seamer (92-94 MPH, t-95), a slider
(85-87 MPH), a splitter (84-86 MPH), and a cutter (the Salem MiLB.tv announcer
indicated this pitch was separate from the slider), although he mostly focuses
on his fastball/slider combo. He’s the most polished pitcher acquired from the
Red Sox and his slider was considered one of the best in Boston’s system.
The secondaries: As
a 2016 draft pick, Nogosek won’t have to be protected from the Rule-5 draft
until the 2019-20 offseason.
While
he’s never started a game in the minors – and likely won’t be anytime soon –
he’s spent most of his time in the Red Sox system closing out games. He’s
appeared in 59 games and been the last pitcher on the mound for his team in 46
of those appearances, with 21 saves to his name. Apparently BA speculated that
he might start, but they might’ve had some
misinformation with respect to his repertoire. When it comes to minor
league relievers, failed starters like Bautista and Jamie Callahan are
generally going to have a higher upside than pure relievers, so if you’re
looking at pure relievers, they better be closing, or at least pitching at the
end of games.
With
two potential above average-to-plus pitches to his name, Nogosek has a solid
chance to make it as a middle relief option for the Mets, although that won’t
be happening anytime soon. He hasn’t even pitched in Double-A yet, and the Mets
now have more upper level pen depth, so there will be plenty of competition for
the Vegas pen spots.
