Previewing The Mets New Minor League Relievers: Jacob Rhame

He'll fit right in

Continued from here

Unless otherwise noted, the "stuff" information gathered comes from listening to the MiLB.tv broadcasters as I dug up old highlights.

From the Curtis Granderson trade

RHP Jacob Rhame, 24

2017 with the Oklahoma City Dodgers: 48 IP, 27.2 K%: 5 BB%, 4.31 ERA, 3.69 FIP, 32.1 GB%, 12.8% Swinging strike rate, 69% Strikes

The path to the Mets: Before the Mets traded for him, before the Dodgers drafted, and before his final season of College ball, Jacob Rhame was nearly out of baseball. One day he was a freshman pitching for the Oklahama Sooners, the next day he was just a freshman, and a suddenly overweight one at that. The numbers suggest he put on about 50 pounds in his first year at school, and (likely as a result) that he lost ~5 MPH on his fastball, so his coach at Oklahoma cut him.

Previewing The Mets New Minor League Relievers: Ryder Ryan

Continued from here

Unless otherwise noted, the "stuff" information gathered comes from listening to the MiLB.tv broadcasters as I dug up old highlights.

From the Jay Bruce trade

RHP Ryder Ryan, 22

2017 in the MID: 41.1 IP, 25.9 K%: 9 BB%, 4.79 ERA, 3.83 FIP, 36 GB%, 15.4% Swinging strike rate, 66% Strikes

The path to the Mets: When Ryder Ryan was in high school in North Carolina, he posted a 0.28 ERA over 54.2 IP as a starter, but he also hit .597 with 29 RBI at North Mecklenburg and then went off to play third base at UNC. He barely pitched and didn’t play much 3B in two years at UNC either, but the one appearance he made on the mound was enough to get some teams interested in him.

Previewing The Mets New Minor League Relievers: Jamie Callahan

Continued from here

Unless otherwise noted, the "stuff" information gathered comes from listening to the MiLB.tv broadcasters as I dug up old highlights.

From the Addison Reed Trade

RHP Jamie Callahan, 22 (until 8/24)

2017 in the EL: 13 IP, 42.6 K%: 0 BB%, 1.38 ERA, 0.19 FIP, 42.3 GB%, 19% Swinging strike rate, 64% Strikes
2017 in the IL: 29 IP, 28.6 K%: 10.3 BB%, 4.03 ERA, 3.09 FIP 37 GB%, 15.4% Swinging strike rate, 63.5% Strikes

The path to the Mets: The Red Sox drafted Jamie Callahan near the end of the 2nd round in 2012, using the 87th pick on a young righty out of Dillon High School in South Carolina. He got a little GCL work during the 2012 season, went to the NYPL for 2013, and was then promoted to the SAL for 2014, where he struggled to a 6.96 ERA over 25 starts. He issued 5.5 BB/9-innings that year and still wasn’t showing any improvements while repeating with Greenville in early 2015, so the Red Sox moved him to the bullpen, which is when things started turning around for the young righty.

Previewing The Mets New Minor League Relievers: Stephen Nogosek

Continued from here

Unless otherwise noted, the "stuff" information gathered comes from listening to the MiLB.tv broadcasters as I dug up old highlights.

From the Addison Reed Trade

RHP Stephen Nogosek, 22

2017 in the SAL: 35.1 IP, 32.1 K%: 7.9 BB%, 2.55 ERA, 3.68 FIP, 35.4 GB%, 13.4% Swinging strike rate, 64% Strikes
2017 in the CAR: 17.2 IP, 23.7 K%: 13.2 BB%, 4.08 ERA, 5.66 FIP, 34.1 GB%, 11.6% Swinging strike rate, 59.5% Strikes

The path to the Mets: The Red Sox drafted Stephen Nogosek in the 6th round of the 2016 draft out of the University of Oregon and sent him to the NYPL to begin his pro career. He was good enough out of the gates that the Red Sox let him finish the year in the SAL. He was back in the SAL to start 2017, but it wasn’t long before he was promoted to the Carolina League, which is the same level as the St. Lucie Mets.

Previewing The Mets New Minor League Relievers: Gerson Bautista

Continued from here

Unless otherwise noted, the “stuff” information gathered comes from listening to the MiLB.tv broadcasters as I dug up old highlights.

From the Addison Reed Trade

RHP Gerson Bautista, 22

2017 in the CAR: 45.1 IP, 24.1 K%: 12.7 BB%, 5.16 ERA, 3.74 FIP, 37.5 GB%, 11.6% Swinging strike rate, 60% Strikes

The path to the Mets: The Red Sox signed Gerson Bautista for $250K as a 17-year old international free agent on 4/1/2013, but Bautista would miss the entire 2013 season with a PED suspension. He spent 2014 dominating in the DSL as a starter, did the same in the GCL during the 2015 season, but was then moved to the pen for the 2016 season. He split 2016 between the NYPL and the SAL, and did well enough during his short stint in Greenville to start the 2017 season in the FSL.

Previewing The Mets New Minor League Relievers: Drew Smith

Continued from here

Unless otherwise noted, the “stuff” information gathered comes from listening to the MiLB.tv broadcasters as I dug up old highlights.

From the Lucas Duda Trade

RHP Drew Smith, 23

2017 in FSL (w/Tigers): 11.2 IP, 29.3 K%: 9.8 BB%, 0.77 ERA, 2.77 FIP, 14.9% Swinging strike rate; 68% Strikes
2017 in FSL (w/Rays): 28.2 IP, 24.1 K%: 4.3 BB%, 2.20 ERA, 2.32 FIP, 11.1% Swinging strike rate; 68% Strikes
Also spent 4.2 IP between Double-A and Triple-A with the Rays.

The path to the Mets: Drew Smith was a top-100 pick in the 2015 draft, taken 99th overall (3rd round) by the Detroit Tigers out of Dallas Baptist University – a program that has produced a lot of pro talent over the years, including fellow Mets prospect Joe Shaw and former Mets reliever (and fan favorite) Vic Black. He was sent to rookie ball for his first season – where he dominated – and then spent all of 2016 as a standout reliever in the Midwest League.

Previewing The Mets New Minor League Relievers

The Mets traded Lucas Duda, Addison ReedJay Bruce, and Curtis Granderson for a quintet of hard throwing minor league relievers, so let’s check them out!

The Mets have made five trades of note so far during the July/August hot stove season of 2017, trading Lucas Duda, Addison Reed, Jay Bruce, Neil Walker, and Curtis Granderson in exchange for six right-handed minor league pen arms and a PTBNL. The trade market for Duda, Bruce, Walker, and Granderson was basically non-existent this season, and (depending on who you ask) the Mets may not have been willing to eat salary for a better prospect return in some of those deals, so the Mets chose to target minor league power arms that project to help in the bullpen over the next few seasons.

Roster moves: Steven Matz is heading to the DL and will have season-ending surgery on the nerve tissue in his throwing arm – same thing Jacob deGrom had last year and Desmond Lindsay had a few weeks ago. Jhoan Urena and Kelly secrest were added to the 51s roster, Alberto Baldonado was moved to the DL and Logan Taylor to the temporary inactive list. Adonis Uceta was promoted to the Rumble Ponies. Looks like Mets 21st round pick Aaron Ford is getting a promo to the Columbia Fireflies - Columbia has had to use a position player in consecutive days.

Recapish

Injuries to the Mets, double-headers in Double-A, end of season innings limits, and possibly even more factors led to a bullpen game for the Las Vegas 51s in Fresno Thursday night, and five Las Vegas pitchers combined for a six-hit shutout (with 12 K: 2 BB total) for a third straight win over the Grizzlies. This was a very tight game through seven innings, but then the 51s connected for three in the 8th and another in the 9th to ease the pressure on a recently overworked (yet so far resilient) pen. Phil Evans went deep for Las Vegas in the 7th, and the two newest bats – Jeff McNeil and Travis Snider – combined for five hits in the win.
