Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s made it two straight over the Baby Cakes Saturday night in New
Orleans, using a balanced offensive attack to back a strong effort from Sean
Gilmartin and the 51s pen. Gilmartin had to work hard to just allow two runs
over the first two innings, but then figured things out for three great frames
before reaching his pitch limit. Brandon Nimmo and Travis Taijeron led the 51s
charge with three hits each, but the 51s got contributions from everyone two
through five in the lineup, plus a long three run blast off the bat of Xorge
Carrillo in the 8th.
Las
Vegas wasted little time establishing control in this game, scoring three runs
in the 1st, when they sent eight men to the plate. Nimmo, Amed
Rosario, Dom Smith, Taijeron, and Josh Rodriguez connected for five straight
singles to make it 3-0 before Gilmartin took the mound.
The
51s middle infield combined to turn three double plays in this game, all of
which went Rosario-Cecchini-Smith. The first came to end the 1st
inning, allowing Gilmartin to escape a bases loaded, one out situation.
New
Orleans only rally came against Gilmartin in the 2nd and consisted
of a Chad Hinshaw double followed two batters later by a Carlos Paulino homer
to left center.
Taijeron’s
second hit of the game came with two outs in the 3rd, but led to
nothing.
The
second 6-4-3 double play of the game helped Gilmartin finish the 3rd
inning after just seven pitches.
Las
Vegas hit into an inning ending double play of their own in the 5th,
which cut short a potential big inning. Nimmo’s second hit of the game advanced
Cecchini (walk) to second base to start the frame, and then Smith singled
Cheech home two batters later, with the aid of an error on Henshaw in center
field. Buuut, that’s when Taijeron followed with a double play grounder to end
the threat.
Logan
Taylor took over for Gilmartin in the 6th, and he worked three
scoreless innings for the 51s. He did issue three walks, but one was
intentional in the 6th, and that one definitely worked out, as
Taylor struck out the next batter to end the inning and escape a bases loaded
threat. The 51s turned their third double play of the game for Taylor to help
him through the 8th.
When
Xorge Carrillo came to the plate with two on and two outs in the 8th,
the Baby Cakes were still holding onto hope that they could come back in a 4-2
game. That hope sailed away as Carrillo’s fifth homer of the year sailed over
the wall to make it a 7-2 game.
Although
the game was out of reach, this lineup can be pretty relentless, and a Nimmo
double led to one more run in the 9th. Taijeron eventually brought
him home with two outs before Las Vegas left the bases loaded in the frame.
Albert
Baldonado finished things off for Las Vegas in the 9th, striking out
Brandon Barnes and Paulino back-to-back to seal the win. Baldonado had his
first real rough outing of the year last time out (3 runs allowed over 0.1 IP),
so I’m sure Manager Pedro Lopez was happy to use this blowout as a chance to
get him some confidence back.
The
51s look to clinch a series win in New Orleans on Sunday afternoon behind
top-starter Tyler Pill.
