Recapish

Despite an outstanding effort from Logan Taylor, who was making a spot start after pitching an inning out of the pen Friday night, the Las Vegas 51s couldn’t hold onto a pair of leads Sunday in Albuquerque, taking a 5-3 loss to the Isotopes. The Isotopes pen was able to pick up some key outs when Las Vegas threatened in their half of the 7th, and that momentum bled into the bottom half, when a pair of well-struck extra base hits put them ahead for good. Of note but not related to what happened Sunday, there was no word on Brandon Nimmo, who had been a late scratch before Saturday’s game.
Taylor throws a heater that comes in around 93-94 MPH and peaks at 96, and usually just pairs it with his hard, low-80’s curveball when coming out of the pen, but he also has a changeup, which came in handy a few times Sunday. He made one mistake over his 4 innings, and Jan Vasquez launched it to dead CF for a homer to tie the game at 1-1 in the 3rd. The homer allowed appeared to increase the intensity level from Taylor, who then finished the 3rd in quick order before a perfect 4th brought him to his pitch limit of 50.
Although people aren’t surprised anymore, no one seems ready for the oncoming storm that is Amed Rosario. He came into the game in a 1-14 slump but finished with three hits for the fourth time this year. He had the first hit of the game when he doubled with two outs in the 1st, and his second hit was a 3rd inning single.

Las Vegas couldn’t get Rosario home in the 1st, but they did jump out 1-0 in the 2nd. Travis Taijeron led off the frame with a single, went to 3B on L.J. Mazzilli’s second Triple-A double of the year, and then scored on a groundout.

As mentioned, Taylor’s one mistake tied the game up in the 3rd inning, but he then struck out Raimel Tapia (for the second time in the game) and Rosell Herrera to keep things knotted at 1. He added a strikeout of Noel Cuevas in the 4th, although I cannot provide GIF highlights of the whole strikeout, because the archived feed goes blank in the middle of that AB.

From the first inning

Fortunately, I was watching the 51s game live and caught some of the remaining Las Vegas highlights.
The first two 51s batters in the 5th went down looking, but then Gavin Cecchini doubled to RF to start a rally. He didn’t run out of the box and the announcer suggested that a strong wind blowing from RF to LF throughout the game helped push it fair – oddly enough, it wouldn’t be the only weather-aided hit for Cecchini in this one. Phillip Evans followed with a homer to LF that was lined out in a hurry, making it a 3-1 game. Rosario added his second double of the game (and ninth of the season) in the frame, but was again stranded at 2B.

Cory Burns took over for Las Vegas in the 5th and gave the lead right back. He had nearly worked around a pair of leadoff singles in the frame, but then Raimel Tapia lined a two run single into CF to tie the game at 3.
Arnaldo Berrios led off the 7th with a single, which gave Las Vegas their best scoring opportunity over the final 3 innings. Cecchini sac bunted Berios and Jayce Boyd (pinch hit walk) into scoring position with Evans and Rosario due up, but those two couldn’t come through this time.

Beck Wheeler took over for Las Vegas in the 7th but would leave after 3 batters without recording an out: triple, E8, double. Wheeler induced a shallow pop up from Daniel Castro that should’ve let to an out, but Arnaldo Berrios lost the battle with the sun and the wind, and the ball clunked off his palm for an error.
Gavin Cecchini’s second double of the game came with two outs in the 9th, and fell in with a little help from the sun and wind (and, let’s be honest, plenty of help from Domonic Brown). Unfortunately, Evans hit a groundout to end the game with Rosario on deck. After Evans was thrown out at first base, he and relief pitcher Matt Carasiti had words for each other, which quickly escalated and it briefly looked like the teams might go at it. The umps and some level headed coaches and players kept the teams apart, however, and the Isotopes eventually turned their attention to celebrating their win.

With tensions now running a little higher, these two teams have one game left in this series. Ricky Knapp (1-2, 4.50 ERA) is scheduled to make the start for Las Vegas opposite Jeff Hoffman (2-2, 3.71 ERA) Monday night, with a start time of 8:35 PM for the finale.
