Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies got a huge effort from their catcher in Friday night
in Bowie, as Tomas Nido finished with four hits, four runs batted in, and three
runs scored in the 9-2 series opening win. Although Nido led the stampeding
Ponies, only L.J. Mazzilli finished without a hit in this one, which gave
starter Donovan Hand more than enough offense to work with.
The
Ponies were quick to jump ahead, scoring two runs for Hand before he took the
mound. Champ Stuart led off the game with a walk before stealing second base.
He’d advance to third on Luis Guillorme’s first hit of the game, and then score
on Tomas Nido’s. Kevin Kaczmarski added an RBI single two batters later to
double the lead to 2-0.
Hand
allowed a pair of two out singles in the 1st, but his fourth
grounder induced of the frame ended it. He only had one perfect inning (the 5th),
but he also only allowed one extra base hit, which helped him limit the damage
to just one run over six innings of work. He finished with more walks than
swinging strikes induced, but the veteran starter worked his way through the
lineup three times and left ahead 6-1.
Patrick
Biondi picked up his only hit of the game in the 2nd inning, but he
was thrown out trying to steal second base. Champ Stuart then struck out for
the first of three times in the game before successfully swiping second base
for the second time.
The
Rumble Ponies doubled their lead again in the 3rd, which was started
with a Kevin Taylor single, but highlighted but Nido’s third homer of the
season.
Champ
Stuart connected for a two out double in the 4th inning, but was
stranded at second base.
Binghamton
sent eight men to the plate in the 5th while adding another pair of
insurance runs. Nido started the rally with a single, went to second base on a
wild pitch, to third base when David Thompson worked a walk, and then scored
along with Kevin Kaczmarski (walk) on a fielding error by former Mets prospect
Aderlin Rodriguez.
Matt
Oberste reached on a dribbler with Taylor on second base in the 6th,
but Taylor was caught too far off of third after making a hard turn.
David
Thompson connected for his sixth double of the year in the 7th
inning, but Binghamton couldn’t get anything else going in the frame.
The
Rumble Ponies rallied one last time in the 8th, which was
highlighted by doubles from Luis Guillorme and Nido, who both connected for
their seventh double of the season. Oberste and Kacz added RBI single in the
frame to give Binghamton its biggest lead at 9-1.
Scarlyn
Reyes would allow a run in the 8th, but Binghamton’s offense gave
him and Kelly Secrest more than enough breathing room in this game. Bowie
connected for a double in each of the final two frames, but it proved way too
little, too late for the Baysox in the opener.
These
two continues this series Saturday evening, with Corey Oswalt (3-2, 2.04 ERA)
scheduled to make the 6:35 PM start for Binghamton opposite Brandon Barker
(1-1, 4.35 ERA). Oswalt is looking to bounce back from his last start on May
13th, which wasn’t going well before rain suspended it in the 3rd.
