Recapish
Despite
a mere 1-0 lead, the Columbia Fireflies were cruising through this game while
starter Merandy Gonzalez was on the mound, but then Joseph Zanghi hit a speed
bump in the 8th, and this game went on a wild ride to the finish.
The West Virginia Power scratched out a pair of runs against Zanghi to jump
ahead 2-1, putting the pressure on the Cola bats, and they came through for a
run in the 9th and a walkoff win on a wild pitch in the 10th.
After
not allowing a run in April, Cola starter Merandy Gonzalez allowed seven runs combined
in the 1st innings of his last two starts (six of those in the first
game), so when he walked Ty Moore in the 1st, I wondered if that
problem would pop up again. Fortunately for Merandy and the Fireflies, the next
batter hit a grounder to Andres Gimenez for an inning ending double
play.
Gimenez
then sparked the game’s first run with a one out double in the Fireflies half
of the 1st. He went to third on a check swing single off the bat of
Luis Carpio, and then scored on a sac fly from Michael Paez.
The
first three Power batters of the 2nd went strikeout (Albert Baur),
pop out, strikeout (Alexis Bastardo), but Merandy had to work for another out
because the leadoff batter reached on a strike-three wild pitch. Clark Eagan
kept the 2nd alive for West Virginia, but then Merandy finished the
frame with another strikeout (Chris Harvey).
Merandy
needed just 8 pitches during a very quick 3rd, retiring the Power on
a pop out, groundout, groundout.
Gimenez
showed off his speed with a bunt single in the Cola 3rd, but never
advanced in the frame. Dash Winningham singled in the 4th and Tim
Tebow followed with a walk, but then the final two Fireflies batters went down
swinging to end the threat.
The
Power managed a hit against Merandy in the 4th, 5th, and
6th innings, but only one of those runners even reached scoring
position. He retired the final six batters he faced, finishing his outing with
another strikeout of Harvey in the 7th.
Ali
Sanchez picked up his hit in the 7th, but the other three Fireflies
batters went down on strikes in the frame.
Joseph
Zanghi started the 8th by breaking one of the cardinal rules of
pitching: don’t walk the leadoff batter. After a sac bunt advanced the tying
run into scoring position, Zanghi struck out Moore to put the rally in
jeopardy. Unfortunately for the Fireflies, Hunter Owen and Baur followed with
RBI singles to flip this game on its head. Darwin Ramos took over for Zanghi in
the 9th and worked a dominant frame (2 strikeouts and a groundout),
which kept things at 2-1 with the middle of Columbia’s lineup due up bottom 9.
The
Power gave Columbia a gift in the 9th, as Michael Paez reached on a
throwing error leading off the frame. Dash was up next and he came through with
a hit into RF that would eventually tie the game.
Ramos
stayed on for the 10th but allowed a one out double to Trae Arbet
and had to be replaced after being charged with an intentional walk. Manager
Jose Leger went to Adonis Uceta next, and he picked up his fellow reliever,
stranding the base runners and finishing the frame with a strikeout of Baur.
Jay
Jabs started the Fireflies walkoff rally with a walk in the 10th. With
the game on the line, Leger sent Desmond Lindsay in as a pinch runner, and Gene
Cone up there to bunt. Cone turned his bunt into a single, and then Gimenez followed
with a bunt to advance them both into scoring position. After Carpio worked a
walk, the Power brought in a new pitcher for Paez. That decision backfired
almost immediately, as new pitcher Matt Eckelman uncorked a wild pitch, which
allowed Lindsay to come home with the game winning run.
These
two are right back at it Friday night, with Blake Taylor (0-4, 4.22 ERA)
scheduled to make the 7:05 PM start for the Fireflies.
