Recapish
Gabriel
Llanes turned in his best effort of 2017 Tuesday night, matching one of the
SAL’s top pitcher’s in Alex Wells (1.11 ERA), as the Fireflies took the opener
of their series with Delmarva 2-1. Neither starter factored in the decision,
but Llanes lasted longer and finished with more strikeouts than the Shore Birds
lefty starter. After missed opportunities to jump ahead in the 7th
and 8th innings, Columbia finally walked off on thanks to a bases loaded
walk to Gene Cone in the 9th.
Llanes
has had some strong efforts in the past, but he relied almost exclusively on
inducing weak contact, as evidenced by his previous season high of 3
strikeouts. He nearly matched that total with two strikeouts in the 1st
inning alone, setting both Jake Ring and Chris Clare down swinging for the
final two outs of the frame.
Over
his first 6 innings, Alex Wells allowed just 2 hits, but they happened to be
back-to-back doubles to the Fireflies youthful middle infield in the 1st
inning. 19-year old Luis Carpio went first and lined his double into left
center field, and then 18-year old Andres Gimenez came up and yanked his double
into right center field.
The
Shore Birds were quick to pick up their starter by getting that run back in the
2nd. Chris Shaw led off with a double into LF, and then Llanes’ busy
day as a fielder began. He messed up his first opportunity by dropping a sac
bunt attempt for an E1, which put runners on the corners with nobody out – it
looked like he was trying to check on the runner but took his head off the ball
too quick. The next play was a come backer to Llanes and he fielded it well,
but then made a poor throw to 2B, so they had zero chance at a double play.
After an RBI single allowed the tying run to score, Llanes got his third chance
of the inning, and this time he started an inning ending double play.
Llanes
picked up his third strikeout of the game starting the 3rd inning
(Irving Ortega), and then erased a two out single allowed with a pickoff to end
the frame.
Llanes
then got some web gem style help from Luis Carpio to end the 4th
with a runner stranded on 2B.
With
two on and one out in the 5th, Llanes struck out Ryan McKenna for a
key second out before a grounder to Carpio ended the threat.
For
the first time since the 1st, Llanes would retire the side in order
during the 6th inning. Chris Clare went down swinging to start it,
Llanes was tested as a fielder again, and then Andres Gimenez made a nice play
(not shown on the stream) to end the frame.
A
leadoff double from Gerrion Grim followed by a Preston Palmerio single put
runners on the corners with nobody out in the 7th, which gave the
Shore Birds their best threat yet against Llanes (though it would also be their
last threat of the game). With the game in the balance, Llanes was again forced
to field his position, twice. The Fireflies got a force out at 2B with the
first grounder back to Llanes, and then Grim was erased from 3B on the second
grounder back to Llanes. With the threat lessened but still present and his
night nearing an end, Llanes reached back for one last strikeout, pumping his
fist after whiffing McKenna again.
After
the Houdini act from Llanes in the top half of the frame, Michael Paez started
the bottom half with a double to RF. The Fireflies would load the bases in the
frame, but then Ali Sanchez and Milton Ramos went down swinging back-to-back to
end it.
Adonis
Uceta took over in the 8th and retired all 6 batters he faced,
overwhelming the Shore Birds lineup (and also having to field his position
once). The Fireflies put the first two runners on in the 8th and
eventually moved them both into scoring position, but then Gimenez, Paez, and
Desmond Lindsay went down swinging to end the threat.
The
Fireflies game-winning rally was sparked by a Tim Tebow walk with one out in
the 9th, his second straight PA with a walk. Ali Sanchez followed
with a double to advance Tebow to 3B. Delmarva intentionally walked Milton
Ramos to load the bases and put a force at each base, but that plan backfired
when Gene Cone battled for a walk to bring home the winning run.
These
two teams continue this series Wednesday morning at 11:05 AM, with Merandy
Gonzalez (4-0, 0.00 ERA) scheduled to make the matinee start for Columbia.
