Recapish
The
St. Lucie Mets dropped the series finale in Bradenton 9-4 Thursday night,
meaning they take a 3-1 loss for the series. Wild starting pitching was the
problem for St. Lucie in the first two games of this series (both losses), but
Church was in the strike zone as often as he usually is Thursday night (and
that’s often), he just wasn’t throwing quality strikes. The Mets offense
knocked out another 10 hits, nearly matching the Bradenton total, but finished
with just one extra base hit.
Church
struggled in each of his three frames, and he also allowed a well-struck extra
base hit in each frame. Logan Hill provided the first dagger when he hit a
three-run homerun for his 7th blast of the year in the 1s. Kevin
Krause made it 5-0 when he hit a two-run homerun in the 2nd.
Finally, and after another error from Jhoan Urena at 3B (his fifth of the
series while playing the hot corner), Mitchell Tolman smacked his third double
of the year in the 3rd inning to set up the final two runs scored
against Church (which promptly came around to score on a Casey Hughston
single). Church struck out Hughston and Hill in the 2nd, but never
really got any traction in this start.
Urena
tried making up for his mistake with a big day at the plate. He picked up his
first of three singles in the 2nd inning.
With
two outs in the 3rd, St. Lucie put together their only rally of the
game. John Mora got things going with a single into CF, and then came around
to score on a Wuilmer Becerra single two batters later. Patrick Mazeika
extended his hit streak to 8 straight when he followed with an RBI single of
his own, and then Urena made it 3 straight and a 7-3 game with his second hit
of the game.
Jeff
Diehl doubled for the third time this year leading off the 4th and
went to 3B on Enmanuel Zabala’s hit (only time he put the ball in play), but
the Mets threat was cut short by a double play. Diehl also added a single in this game (third GIF below).
Adam
Atkins was the first reliever to take over for Church. He worked a scoreless 4th
but allowed a run in the 5th before departing. He got some help from John Mora along the way, when Mora showed off his arm to nail a runner trying to take third base on him.
Cameron
Griffin was next up out of the pen and he followed Atkins’ pattern, working a
scoreless 6th before allowing a run in the 7th.
Johnny
Magliozzi had to finish off the 7th for Griffin, and he’d retire all
4 batters out of the pen to finally shut down the Bradenton offense.
The
Mets last chance to cut into the lead came in the 8th, but they
managed just one run in the frame, and none after getting into a ‘runners on 1st
and 3rd with one out’ situation. The run came home when Urena
knocked in Becerra (walk) on a single -> E4 to make it 9-4. J.C. Rodriguez added a single in the inning.
After
a rough visit to Bradenton, the Mets head back to St. Lucie for some home
cooking and a series against Fort Myers. Kevin Canelon (0-0, 5.40 ERA) is lined
up to make his second start of the year for St. Lucie after three straight
relief appearances.
