Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies put together a 9th inning rally to come
back for a 5-4 win in their series opener with Richmond Monday night. Blake
Beavan was added to the Ponies rotation from Triple-A for this start, but he
left the team in a 4-0 hole after six innings on the hill. The Bingo bats
finally got to Beavan’s counterpart in the 7th, and then just would
not quit on this game as they ran out of strikes in the 9th.
Unfortunately, for some reason the Richmond MiLB.tv feed covered most of this
game from terrible angles, so the highlights are more limited than expected.
Tomas
Nido and David Thompson both had 3-hit games at the plate, and both provided
key hits during the 9th inning rally. They also both singled in
their first AB, Nido during the 1st inning and Thompson to start the
3rd. Also shown is Nido’s second hit, which came with two outs in
the 6th, and a Cody Decker double.
The
Flying Squirrels got to Beavan first when they put together a three run rally
in the 2nd inning. The bottom four of the Richmond lineup connected
for four straight singles to make it 2-0, and a third run came home on an RBI
groundout from Slade Heathcott.
Champ
Stuart made a great diving catch to end the 3rd inning and the
coverage somehow caught it; plus there is a David Thompson highlight below as well.
Chris
Shaw made it 4-0 when he took Beavan deep to right center field in the 5th
for his sixth homer of the year.
The
Rumble Ponies cut that lead in half with a 7th inning rally. Kevin
Taylor and L.J. Mazzilli started the frame with back-to-back doubles, and then
David Thompson came through with an RBI single two batters later.
With
the Rumble Ponies just one rally away from tying this game, Manager Luis Rojas
turned to Ben Griset for the 7th, and he turned in a perfect frame.
Rojas then turned to Scarlyn Reyes for the 8th, and he turned in a
perfect frame. The Binghamton pitching staff started Monday with the second
best ERA in the EL (3.37), though about a half-run behind league leading
Trenton. However, if you break that down by starters vs. relievers, you see
that the relievers ERA is less than a tenth of a run behind Trenton. In other
words, the Binghamton pen has been lights out.
The
good relief pitching helped setup the 9th inning comeback.
Binghamton scored their three runs in the 9th on just three singles,
only one of which reached an outfielder. The rally started when David Thompson
was ruled safe on an infield single with one out in the frame. The Richmond
Manager did not agree with the call, so the umpires got together to make sure
they got it right, but it basically couldn’t get overturned at that point.
Next up was pinch-hitter Jiovanni
Mier, and he reached on a HBP. The lineup then turned over for Champ Stuart,
but he struck out for the third time and second out of the 9th,
which left it up to Luis Guillorme. Guillorme beat out a weak grounder to third
for the second infield hit of the inning, loading the bases for Tomas Nido.
After a 5-38 start to Double-A, Tomas Nido was hitting .324/.359/.535 over his previous 18 games entering Monday night, with seven doubles, one triple, two homers, 16 RBI’s and just eleven strikeouts in 78 PA (14.1%). He had a four hit, four RBI night Friday in the Bowie opener, so Richmond brought their closer in to face him. Didn’t matter who was facing him, Nido was going to make contact, and he turned on one against Reyes Moronta for a two run single into LF. Tie game, 4-4.
Cody
Decker followed with a walk, which loaded the bases for Kevin Taylor. Taylor
didn’t have to do a thing except watch four pitches go out of the strike zone
for an RBI walk to give Binghamton their first lead of the night.
With
his team now up 5-4, Rojas went to lefty Kyle Regnault for the 9th,
and Regnault made it three perfect innings of relief to seal the deal on a
really good come back win for Binghamton.
These
two are back at it for the middle game of this series Tuesday night at 6:35 PM.
P.J. Conlon (4-2, 3.47 ERA) is looking to bounce back from a shaky effort in
his last start against Altoona, and he’ll be starting opposite Sam Coonrod
(1-4, 5.19 ERA).
