Recapish
The
Rumble Ponies couldn’t complete a come back against Hartford Monday night,
allowing the Yard Goats to leave Binghamton with a split of their four game
series. Ponies starter P.J. Conlon’s changeup game was on point, which led to a
lot of swinging strikes early, but the Yard Goats got to his other stuff for
nine hits, including a double and solo homer. Things might’ve been worse for
Conlon if not for the fine work controlling the run game done by his catcher
Colton Plaia. The Rumble Ponies had chances to chip away at the lead throughout
the game, but they kept running into outs, which left them one run short when
they rallied in the 9th.
The
Ponies were down 1-0 before a batter was retired. Max White led off the game
with a double to RF and then scored on an Ashley Graeter RBI single to LF.
Conlon recovered to strike out the final two batters of the frame, and Graeter
was caught stealing for the other out.
Hartford’s
1-0 lead did not last long, however, as L.J. Mazzilli took Jack Wynkoop deep in
the Bingo half of the 1st to make it a 1-1 game.
Mazzilli
was one of two Bingo players to finish with three hits, but the other player to
reach three hits (Gustavo Nunez) ran into two outs. He was caught stealing in
the 2nd and thrown out at third base for the final out of the 7th.
The
game remained tied until the 3rd, when Hartford made the most out of
a pair of singles. #9 hitter Luis Jean (the majors is one thing, but batting
behind the pitcher in the minors?) started the frame with a single, went to
second on White’s second hit of the game, to third on a sac bunt, and then
scored on a sac fly.
The
8-9 setup in the Yard Goats lineup worked out perfectly in the 4th,
when they added another pair of runs. Conlon issued a walk with one out and
then Jan Vazquez reached on a bunt single, which brought up the pitcher.
Wynkoop advanced both runners into scoring position with a bunt, and then Jean
singled them home. Jean was caught trying to steal second to end the frame.
The
Rumble Ponies loaded the bases in the 4th, but a Kevin Kaczmarski
double play grounder ended the inning with no runs scored. Kevin Taylor and
Matt Oberste singled for Binghamton in the frame.
Hartford
added one more run against Conlon when Correlle Prime took him deep in the 6th.
After allowing just five homers throughout the 2016 season that was the sixth
homer Conlon has allowed in 2017.
The
Yard Goats capped their scoring with another solo blast in the 7th,
making it a 6-1 game – Graeter took Scarlyn Reyes deep for his third homer of
2017.
Binghamton
finally broke through for another run in the bottom of the 7th.
Kaczmarski kept the inning alive with a two out single, went to second on
Nunez’s second hit of the game, and then scored on a Colton Plaia single to RF.
Unfortunately for Binghamton, right fielder Drew Weeks came up throwing to
third base, and Nunez was easily out to end the frame.
Plaia’s
final defensive contribution came in the 8th, when he picked a
runner off of third to end the inning.
The
Rumble Ponies left the bases loaded again in their half of the 8th.
Mazzilli’s second hit of the game was the only Bingo base hit in the frame.
Have
to credit Binghamton for never giving up in this game, and they nearly had
enough 9th inning magic to pull of the come back. Kaczmarski sparked
the final rally by working a walk to start the frame. He went to third on
Nunez’s third hit of the game, and then scored on a Cody Decker pinch-hit
double. Mazzilli came up two batters later and brought home both runners, but
it was still just a 6-5 game and there were now two outs in the 9th.
Kevin Taylor has been one of the EL leaders in OBP this year and he was due up
next, but he could only groundout to end the game.
After
splitting their series with Hartford, Binghamton was set to travel to Trenton
and open a three game series with the Thunder. Trenton has the best record in
the Eastern League and a two-game division lead over Binghamton, so this series
has big implications for the season. Plus, there’s always a little extra
rivalry involved when the Mets and Yankees minor league squads meet up,
especially for games in the North East. Back in 2014, Jhoan Urena was tossed
out of a NYPL game for having
a stare down with the SI Yankees bench after the national anthem – it was
the only game Urena didn’t play in all season.
