Recapish
With
offense at a premium, Corey Oswalt and three Rumble Ponies relievers were at
the top of their game while clinging to a 1-0 lead in Wednesday’s matinee
finale against Akron. Both teams finished with just 5 hits, but a flare off the
bat of Patrick Biondi was misplayed (likely due to the sun), allowing David
Thompson to come home for the game’s only run.
Oswalt
has improved with each start for the Ponies this season but was especially
sharp for Binghamton early in this one. He retired the first 8 Wednesday on
three strikeouts, four groundouts, and a pop out to SS, but then ran into two
out trouble in both the 3rd and 4th innings. Akron was
able to keep working until they drew a walk against Oswalt in both frames,
which really ran up his pitch count.
Outside
of Kevin Kaczmarski, who went 2-2 with a double, Binghamton did nothing at the
plate over the first 4 innings. Kacz also stole 2 bases Wednesday.
David
Thompson hit a leadoff double in the 5th inning, but he hadn’t even
advanced to 3B when Patrick Biondi came to the plate three batters later. The
pop up is not a result Biondi is likely happy with, but it goes down as a game
winning RBI single in the box score, and that’s what matters.
After
the previous two out trouble, Oswalt bounced back with a perfect 5th,
striking out Eric Stamets and Greg Allen along the way. He had to leave with
one out and Todd Hankins on 3B in the 6th, when lefty Kelly Secrest
took over from the pen. Secrest escaped the jam, but not without some help from third baseman David Thompson, who made a fantastic diving stop and throw for the
final out. Biondi also made a nice play in the frame before Oswalt came out.
Bingo
looked to their relief aces Tim Peterson and Alberto Baldonado for the final
2.2 innings for the Rumble Ponies, and they both kept their ERA at 0.00,
although things got shaky for Baldonado in the 9th. The big lefty
allowed the tying run to reach third base with two outs in the frame, but
induced a game ending groundout from Joe Sever to seal the deal.
Peterson just had to face one batter in the seventh after taking over for Secrest thanks to this Tomas Nido throw |
In
addition to finishing a sweep of Akron, the Rumble Ponies won their 4th
straight Wednesday afternoon to complete their home stand. They travel to New
Hampshire Thursday for their next series, with Casey Delgado (0-4, 9.15 ERA)
scheduled to pitch for Binghamton in the opener.
