Recapish
Trailing
5-0 heading to the 9th, Brandon Nimmo led off the frame with a solo
blast to LF, and then eight of the nine New Orleans fielders came off the field
and the game was all but over. So, technically, the 51s lost on a walkoff
homerun from their own player, which may be a first in baseball history. Of
course, the reason everyone on the Baby Cakes had walked off the field except
for Moises Sierra (LF) was increasing rainfall intensity. Per the announcers,
the umpires hadn’t waved them off yet, which may be why Sierra stayed (that or
he was just being playful), but they did shortly after that, and the game was
called thirty minutes into the delay.
This
game started as a pitcher’s duel between two starters on a limited pitch count.
Wilfredo Boscan made his seventh appearance for Las Vegas and has now held his
opponent to one run or fewer in five of those seven appearances. New Orleans
only managed more than one base runner in one inning against Boscan, something
Cakes starter Chris O’Grady prevented the 51s from doing in his five innings.
Dominic
Smith picked up the first hit of the game when he doubled leading off the 2nd.
Also shown is Phillip Evans single from the 6th.
The
51s weren’t able to turn a double play on this slow grounder in the 2nd
inning, but check out the effort on the turn from Phillip Evans.
Travis
d’Arnaud has thrown out two of three potential base stealers in two games
behind the plate for Las Vegas, and both came on a strikeout-throw out double
play. He threw out Brandon Barnes in the 3rd.
Brandon
Nimmo had a big day at the plate for Las Vegas, finishing with three of the
seven hits, and he’s starting to look like he’s out of his ‘Spring Training
phase.’ He singled leading off the 4th, doubled leading off the 7th,
and went oppo taco for a homer leading off the 9th.
Boscan
and d’Arnaud left the game together, with Ben Rowen and Xorge Carrillo taking
over as the 51s battery in the 7th. Unfortunately, miscues got the
best of Vegas in the frame, leading to a pair of unearned runs for New Orleans.
Ben Rowen failed to a field a grounder that went through his legs leading off
the inning, which put Sierra on first. Nick Noonan came through for the Cakes
three batters later when he singled Siera home from third. After Rowen kept the
frame alive with a walk, Barnes came through with what is now called an RBI
single, although it was marked as an error on Josh Rodriguez at the time.
Las
Vegas responded with two hits in an inning for the first time during the 8th,
but it led to nothing. Alberto Baldonado took over next for the 51s and his
up-and-down start in the PCL continued when he allowed three runs in the frame.
Baldonado allowed a two out homerun to Ramon Cabrera for all three runs, which may
have proved huge in allowing the game to be called after Nimmo’s homer in the 9th.
Had Nimmo’s homer made it a 2-1 game, the 51s would’ve had a case to keep the
game going with nobody out in the 9th. After allowing the homer,
Baldonado struck out Nick Noonan, but he reached on a wild pitch, which meant Baldonado
needed a fourth out in the frame.
With
this series in the books Las Vegas heads to Round Rock for a four-game series
with the Express. The exciting news is that Steven Matz is scheduled to start
in the opener and Round Rock traditionally has very good coverage of games. The
series starts Tuesday night at 8:05 PM.
