Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies pushed their win streak to 5 straight games with a 9-4
road vicory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in the series opener Thursday
night. Blue Jays #2 prospect Sean Reid-Foley was knocked out after just 0.2 IP,
with his team already trailing 4-0 and Binghamton threatening for more.
Meanwhile, Ponies starter Casey Delgado, who struggled in April, turned in his
best start of the year and finished with his first win of 2017.
The
Ponies jumped ahead 4-0 in the 1st on four singles and three walks.
Luis Guillorme got things started when he beat out an infield hit, and Tomas
Nido knocked him in two batters later for the games first run. Foley followed
with his second walk of the inning, which loaded the bases, and then Kevin
Taylor made it a 2-0 game with an RBI single into LF. After Patrick Biondi
walked in a run, Jio Mier hit a fly ball to RF that went for a sac fly and that
was it for Foley – he was done at 37 pitches. Colton Plaia actually added a single
in the inning, but Kevin Taylor was out by a hair at home.
Delgado
did a good job working around an error in the 1st inning, picking up
a strikeout of Anthony Alford to pick up his teammate Jio Mier after the error.
Harold Ramirez struck out swinging
to start the Cats 2nd inning, and it was starting to look like
Delgado would cruise through this outing, but then Raffy Lopez took him deep to
RF to make it a 4-1 game.
New Hampshire had their best shot
against Delgado in the 3rd, when they loaded the bases with nobody
out. Delgado walked the first two batters of the frame, but then struck out
Alford and Ryan McBroom as soon as the bases were full. Ramirez hit a groundout
to Luis Guillorme to end the threat with no additional runs for New Hampshire.

After the momentum swing to end the 3rd, Binghamton finally took advantage of all the walks they were drawing to increase their lead in the 4th. They had scoring threats cut short by double plays in both the 2nd and 3rd inning, but Kevin Kaczmarski took a HBP with the bases loaded to bring home the first run of the 4th, and Tomas Nido made it a 6-1 game with a sac fly. Guillorme’s second single was the only Bingo hit of the frame.
After
allowing a pair of singles across the first 3 batters of the 4th inning,
Delgado struck out J.C. Cardenas for the second out of the inning, but then
lost control for a few batters. He uncorked a wild pitch before walking the
next two batters, which allowed the second Cats run to come home. He finished
the frame with another strikeout of Alford.
The
Ponies struck right back in the 5th, making the most of two singles
to increase their lead to 8-2. Biondi singled to move David Thompson (HBP) up
to 2B, and then Colton Plaia singled them both home two batters later.
Delgado
finished his night in the 5th, when he struck out McBroom again, and
then watched Luis Guillorme start an inning ending double play. Lefty Kyle
Regnault took over for Delgado to start the 6th, and he also got some help from Luis Guillorme to get through the frame scoreless.
Biondi
added another single leading off the 7th, and Jio Mier doubled him
home to cap the Bingo scoring and make it a 9-2 game.
After
working around some walks in the 6th inning, Regnault went back out
for the 7th and had trouble finding the third out. He issued his
fourth walk of the night during the frame, and later allowed a two out double by
Derrick Loveless, which brought home the games final two runs.
While
Regnault was wild (54% strikes), Luis Mateo was anything but, retiring six of
seven batters faced while throwing 70% strikes. Mateo finished with 2 of the
Ponies 12 strikeouts as a staff, and added 0 walks, after 8 combined from
Delgado and Regnault – the Cats were worse, finishing with 10 walks as a staff. Finally, he also benefitted from Luis Guillorme's nice defense at SS, on the game ending play.
These
two continues this series with a double-header Friday night starting at 5:35
PM. The Ponies have announced Mickey Jannis as their game one starter, but have
no one listed for game two as of when this was posted.
