Minor News
If you have any link
tips, suggest them to @Astromets31 on twitter and I’ll add them in.
Check
out yesterday’s results here. Jeff Glenn was moved to the Las Vegas 51s DL so Rafael Montero could be activated. Mickey Jannis activated and Casey Delgado moved to the 7-day DL in Binghamton.
Steve
Sypa of Amazin’
Avenue gave a nice overview of what to expect from this year’s draft.
The
Mets are the only team dealing with injuries, as the Las Vegas 51s lost
a key member of their bullpen while in Round Rock: Dave Roseboom hurt his
foot and it wasn’t yet clear the extent of the damage, but his Manager doesn’t
expect him back soon.
Someone
at scout.com
jumps on the “promote Tebow for the moneyz” argument (Mets don’t make money off
of Columbia, they do off of St. Lucie), suggesting he could take Nick Sergakis’
spot because Sergakis hasn’t been hitting well lately anyway. For the season,
Tebow has a lower average and fewer homer’s than Sergakis in more games played
while at a lower level. Plus, Sergakis has a .916 OPS with 11 XBH in his last
21 games played for St. Lucie.
I don’t have the time and probably
wouldn’t cover the money aspect of Tebow anyway, but I pointed out the
financial impact for the Mets in the comments
section at SBNation two weeks ago, when the “big” Tebow story was how much
additional money he was making each SAL team. More importantly, the Mets have known
about this all along, so this sudden reaction around the internet (google ‘Tim
Tebow promotion’ and you’ll see what I mean) that the Mets will promote him
soon for the extra cash is just bad baseball coverage - they haven't denied that $ was part of the reason they signed Tebow, but if it was all about the $, Tebow would've been playing for St. Lucie from the start. Not to mention the poor
takes in response to one good or bad week from the former NFL star.

on Tebow - I think the Mets consider letting him play in Brooklyn this year, though the St. Lucie market is probably better for a Florida alumn. In any event, agree that taking Sergakis's spot is a ridiculous notion.
ReplyDeleteIf anyone loses a spot it's probably John Mora (at least he's an OFer). And if anyone replaces Sergakis, it has to be Michael Paez - whose putting together a nice campaign.
What's up with Dale Burdick, btw? Like why is he playing in AA?
Even Mora has been having a nice May (.783 OPS for the month).
DeleteBrooklyn would be more appropriate than St. Lucie, though I wonder if Tebow would accept that.
Paez has been a very nice surprise, hopefully he spends the 2nd half in St. Lucie. Need to see how his pull power plays against more advanced pitchng.
As for Burdick, his positional versatility makes him useful as a utility guy, but I'm not sure why he specifically gets the call. When Burdick went to Double-A last year, Bingo radio said it was like a reward for a good XST, but it's not like he was hitting much with St. Lucie when he got the temporary promo this year.
This year, the Rumble Ponies needed an infield bench bat, so the Mets sent them someone they felt comfortable with riding the bench for a couple of weeks - I'd guess that's the same reason Arnaldo Berrios was playing for Las Vegas for a few weeks. Eventually Gustavo Nunez was signed and Burdick returned to St. Lucie.
